Am thinking about making a new single player campign to RtCW
however before i start looking into stuff and make homepage and all the required stuff, i have a question, are they still rtcw players, and pepole who willing to perticpate or RtCW time has passed ?
thinking about - full convertion
as far as multilayer community goes we still have a small community going with only about 4 server populated but its nice and intimate. a bit OT rather amusing. there are two main rtcw comunites the 1.3 patch comunity and the 1.4 patch comunity (its more about the server available on each patch than the actually updates now) and there are now so few clans on each patch that there are regualr so called 1.3 vs 1.4 clan matches. but its very good and with such a dedicated community there is lots of stuff to do and always tournaments and clan matches going on so never a dull moment rely
as for single player i doubt there are people who regularly play through any single player game never mind one this old but if you can make a new campaign and get it promoted with some good reviews i think people would be willing to download and play it.
however i must say that i think you probably underestimate the work load involved with doing this. not only its the workload for making one level (even to the standard of an old game like rtcw) massive but a whole campaign? even a shot one like 5 maps is a hell of a lot. this rely presents a problem since you are trying to make players look at an older game again and for this you need a considerable amount of new content like textures, models, props, settings, objectives/tasks and you would also have to implement new game play mechanics and use the AI in new and more interesting ways than than in the original rtcw campain or you run the risk of making a “new” campaign but you just have the feeling you are sort of replaying elements of the original rtcw
Having released 3 SP campaigns I’d have to aggree with carnage on his general points about work load; single player maps are not for the faint of heart and beleave me I had my periods of doubt with the ones I did and that was when the game was still relatively new - the work load is massive.
Good SP maps take time, Mages Skulls took 18 months to complete, Relic Hunt about 8 months and Castle Keep about 4 (I think, it’s been a long time since I looked at the figures); I did have a forth (Generator) but abandoned it after the scripting got way too complex for me to handle - it did undergo a rebuild but is still left unfinished (until D3 Wolf is released).
There is still a pretty good replay rate on SP episodes though so although it’s very late in the game, SP maps are still in demand by the community.
hmm and what about the unpatched rtcw version?, rtcw 1.0 still has a lot of servers (DM and OBJ)
Though this version does not have punkbuster, we have enough clans to organise clanwars and so on…
btw there are a lot more (populated) servers in rtcw 1.0 than in 1.4 and 1.3
ah i cant say i have gone as far back as version 1. also a lot of the 1.3/1.4 player i think have the game of the year addition that means you have to install to 1.3 at the earliest
