The Role of Soldier Class in Competitive Play

(Jojack) #1

Is there one?

I’m wanting to buy a soldier, deciding who I want, and it’s hard to justify because it’s very rare that I would ever be better off with a soldier than a support class.

I played Wolfenstein ET competetively and the soldier class we pretty obsolete in competition other than in very specific circumstances on specific maps. But you never absolutely needed one. You were almost always better off going 2 medics, 2 field ops, 1 engineer.

I have played as Fragger while he’s free right now, and I just don’t every see a time he is more valuable to my team than if I was a medic, field ops, or engineer. Even if my K/D ratio is better. Pushing the objective as Proxy, or keeping my team supplied with ammo while restricting the enemy with air support or keeping my team up and fighting as Aura is way more valuable to a team in competition than a slightly higher K/D ratio.

So am I just biased based on my ET experience or is there something there? I’ve only been in game a few days and it’s really bringing back the Wolfenstein nostalgia, and I’m loving it. Just want to make smart purchases on my first few mercs. I bought Proxy but that’s it for now.

Thanks.

Watch competition matches. Most of the time you’ll see Fraggers wrecking shit due to his health, grenade and heavy weapon combination. The faster characters aren’t as good when there is a higher standard of aim among all the players.

Soldier class? You mean support?

No, like Fragger, Rhino, etc

I used to play ET semi-competitively too and I can say that the soldiers in this game are far more effective than in ET. Fragger for example has a lot better HP than any medic class which really shows when playing against good people. If you go 1 on 1 against a Fragger who can aim as a Sawbonez for example you’ll most likely get destroyed.

Basically soldiers are actually soldiers in this game meaning that they are better at killing than supports (unlike W:ET).

Fragger is a pretty big presence in Competitive play… Dunno about Rhino, Nader, or Thunder (when he’s released).

The ones I don’t see or hear about much are the Fire-Support classes, at least until we get Stoker. I also know Vasilli isn’t played that much because of the playstyle people usually use him for.

When we get RedEye and Stoker, we’ll like see the Competitive set up look like…

Stoker, Fragger, RedEye, Sawbonez, Proxy/Sawbonez

Soldiers, aka Assult, are all about damage, dealing it and taking it, they are the best classes for slaying enemies in large numbers.

That said, I def think Nader needs a small buff in this area. Not a major one, she’s already pretty good, but I think more health, less speed, and changing how martyrdom works in exchange for a damage buff to nades, is what she needs to really suit her class job.

Fragger and Rhino are both rock solid imo, though I think Fragger could do without cooked nades, and instead just get a larger blast radius.

Stoker, Fragger, RedEye, Sawbonez, Proxy/Sawbonez[/quote]

If it’s 5v5 we’ll probably see Stoker, Redeye, Fragger, Proxy, and Sawbonez as the standard.

Fragger is pretty much required as a one-of on teams to deal with enemy medics. You need the nade to clear out Aura camps and zone medics away from revives. Forcing the medics to space out lets you finish downed enemies
