Indulge me in this little bit of reminiscence I’m pretty sure no one will remember me, but back in the heyday of W:ET me and my merry clan VPL were relatively well known around these parts. Our clan recruited from far and wide and our server, the VPL Bolthole, was highly regarded for it’s fun, challenging and fair group of reprobates running it! We created maps, videos and music based around our beloved game. Over the years we made many friends, including one time SD employee, Salteh, many of which have proven to be long lasting. The experiences W:ET brought to my life were significant and I can’t say my world would have been the same without it. From that very first win in a ClanBase league match to our 25th LAN, each and every memory stays with each and every one of the die hard VPLers to this day.
Most of us have moved on to Xbox now that W:ET has gone to the wayside, but I still pop in every now and again, surveying the lay of the land. My skills have definitely degraded, but not so much to embarrass myself! The fun was definitely still there. I bought the ET:QW limited collectors edition after being involved in the beta. I pre-ordered, and played to death, Brink. But neither of these could hold a candle to the joy that was brought by W:ET. There was nothing wrong with the games per se, well apart from Brink’s technical issues in the first couple of weeks, but they just couldn’t live up to Wolfy. There was just that little something, that I can’t quite put my finger on, that was missing. Then it dawned on me…community. The W:ET community was second to none. Everyone was having a good time, well there were some ne’er-do-well’s, but a well admined server always put paid to them, of which we prided ourselves on in the VPL Bolthole.
So this brings me to Dirty Bomb. I know there has only been one teaser and one pre-alpha gameplay vid, but it certainly seems to feel a lot like W:ET. It’s tight and airy. Plenty of opportunity for all classes to play their part. But it just seems to have that je ne sais quoi. I can’t wait to see more from the SD guys in the coming months, I can be sure I won’t be disappointed. I just hope this game is able to slice through the mediocre “AAA” titles that will no doubt surround it’s release and garner a community that will nurture the game and not drop it as soon as the “next big thing” rolls around. I had now hesitation in signing up for the Founder’s Club as soon as I heard about it and this will bring me back to my PC for more late nights and long weekends. I have only played 3 games on my PC for any considerable amount of time, 2 of which are SD IP’s (W:ET and ET:QW, Brink was an Xbox purchase) and the other is Football Manager. Dirty Bomb will definitely be my 4th and hopefully will prove to give me another 6 years of enjoyment a la W:ET.

PS. When do you get to reserve your in game name? Does it just reserve your Warchest name? (ie. mines ayatollah, whereas my gaming name is Chin, I had that reserved in QW.) I’d hate to miss out on “Chin” because of this.
EDIT: Also, are some posts missing on here? I have tried to check my old posts and they seem to start in Sept 2006. 2 years of legendary conversations are missing.
