The phantom identity crisis
Cloak coupled with the katana is what makes him above average at melee, or at least used to be. The cloak isn’t invisible point blank, we all know that much. But sitting dead still or at a distance, it actually is invisibility. Tactics like baiting a merc to chase you while you sit in a corner and watch them run past is exactly the sort of thing you can only do with cloak, before chopping them down before they have a chance to react.
Doing a banzai charge with phantom is not an effective strategy, as it should be. He should be able to flank and use the one tool that actually makes him something the other team has to work around, rather than just swat away every now and again like a snarky mosquito. As it stands now though, he can’t. Making him rely on his gun (which is a close range SMG anyway) rather than the sword is exactly why he is underpowered.
The katana is to phantom as the cricket bat is to proxy. A melee weapon. Its not his primary, its his melee. The enemy team has to work around the fact that phantom is INVISIBLE. Which phantom can use to surprise enemies and get an advantage in a fire fight. I think its amazingly stupid that you want him to rely on the MELEE as opposed to his GUN, like literally every other merc.

Phantom isn’t every other merc. The Katana’s damage makes it very special, and has great potential to make Phantom something unique and interesting. Being able to instakill fast mercs and very quickly kill everyone else gives him great potential as a fun slayer. The balancing factor is that it’s melee, while every other character uses guns.
Phantom’s UP problem is that melee got nerfed into the basement simply because of an exploit a few unsportsmanlike people were exploiting. As a result, everyone was given the handicap of the turn speed limit, which made the already high risk-high reward instakill prohibitively risky. That was not fair to everyone who was using him fairly. If that were undone and replaced with a turn limit, the stab would be useful, but beyblading would still be impossible.

I think Phantom just might have stumbled upon a katana to go with his outfit, he sure hasn’t done the training to run faster or swing faster than other mercs.
Sword is just a bit scarier than a knife or a bat, that’s all… I mean, if a robber would pull out a damn sword on you, you would at least expect him to be able to outrun you with the damn thing if he targets you.
