Does SONY have any more updated drivers than that for your video card?

If not you may want to try the generic ATI drivers. HP hasn’t updated the 5650 for my wife’s laptopr, but the ATI ones seem to work fine.

(jfunk) #3

OK, I believe this is the correct driver page for your model. SONY does have a much newer ATI driver available, although it’s not 100% up to date. I would try this latest SONY driver first.

http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?m=VPCEB1Z1E_B&l=en_GB

If that doesn’t work, I’d try the latest ATI driver.

Thanks guys.
Well, update…i tried 2 times with the Hotfix and at 50% my computer crashed, but the 3rd one was the lucky.
Now my issue changed,i get this message :

“LoadLibrary failed with error 998 : (now i translate from greek,so sry for mistakes) access on memory is not valid”.

So i’ll search forum for similar issue.

Which driver are you using now? If you went straight for the latest ATI (11.5A), try using that SONY one instead. Sometimes laptop GPU will not work with the generic drivers, as the adapter has been modified by the laptop manufacturer and their specialized drivers are required.

(Eresis) #6

I have the latest driver with the hotfix now.Yep,i guess i’ll try what u said & everything i can think of.
Thanks.

(Eresis) #7

Ok,i think i did all Vaio updates now (manually) and i still have the latest drivers of ATI & .NET Framework but issue remains when i click to play Brink, this message appears :

“LoadLibrary failed with error 998 : (now i translate from greek,so sry for mistakes) access on memory is not valid”.

(@ jfunk thanks for the help m8!)

OK, when you say you still have the latest drivers from ATI, you mean the 11.5A “hotfix” version right? What I think you should try (and I wouldn’t count on this working, but it’s worth eliminating it as a possible cause) is to remove that driver and use the one from SONY, dated November 2010:
http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/info/info.aspx?l=en_GB&url=VAIO/Updates/EP0000230054.exe&m=VPCEB1Z1E_B&ip=EP0000230054.htm

This is just to make sure that your graphics card is not somehow incompatible with the generic ATI drivers, which is a common situation on laptops. You’ll probably have to manually uninstall the ATI drivers first, as the SONY one may not replace it since it’s older.

Apologies if you’ve already done this, I just interpreted your post as saying that you updated all your other SONY drivers, but kept the ATI version for your GPU.

Also note that there are a lot of ATI problems in general with Brink right now which may be the source of your problem. It’s tough to say though, since most people reporting it are not on laptops, so it’s unclear if your HD 5650 is among those affected or not.

(Eresis) #9

Exactly.
I’ll try it man, thanks and the proper translation of the message is :

“LoadLibrary failed with error 998 : Invalid access to memory location”

Without the catalyst & the 11.5A hotfix i’m back to same issue:
“The OpenGL driver doesn’t support wlgChoosePixelFormatARB”

and with catalyst & 11.5A hotfix i’m in this issue still :
“LoadLibrary failed with error 998 : Invalid access to memory location”

(jfunk) #11

OK, that’s too bad. The 998 error is pretty common in many apps, and generally seems to be related to driver issues.

Question about your laptop, does it have switchable graphics? (Can you switch form the 5650 to an onboard graphics chip to save battery, like an ATI 4200 or an Intel HD?)

If the answer is yes and your IGP is Intel, you can’t use the generic ATI drivers. If the answer is no, or it’s yes but the IGP is also ATI, you should be OK with the ATI drivers.

That being said, my first suggestion would be to wait for this eminent patch before spending too much time pulling your hair out on this one. A combination of Brink patch or next final version of ATI drivers may fix this.

I’m worried that you may be stuck in a holding pattern waiting for SONY to update drivers if you do indeed have switchable graphics w/ Intel on board though, which would suck. That’s one of the big problems with laptops & decent GPUs, the manufacturers so often neglect their drivers.

If you CAN use the ATI drivers and this isn’t fixed with the next patch, I’d probably start a new thread specifying your 5650 mobile adapter in the title to see if you can find some confirmation from other users on the problem. When I have a chance, I will check this myself for you, as I mentioned my wife’s laptop has the same adapter (with 4200 IGP switchable).

I had the same problem and now I fixed it, I got a post where I explained everything in this section.
Hope it will help you.

edit for copy/paste :

GOOD NEWS!!!

It’s working fine for me.

I had restore point from the day I installed brink and directX so I used it and now everything is working fine!

The biggest change is from my drivers software, Now I got and old version from 2009, it’s this one :

Driver Packaging Version 8.683-091217a-092929C
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 8.01.01.984
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0716
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.9236
Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.1217.1632.29627

Maybe it’s the solution for people having a G73.

Hope it will help you guys, now I go playing BRINK!!!

(Eresis) #13

PROBLEM SOLVED !

jfunk thanks m8 really.

In a way i don’t know how it get fixed…i uninstalled 11.5 catalyst and hotfix, then i installed the link u gave me,nothing, then i installed catalyst 1st and then the hotfix BUT this time when halfway of hotfix installation (about 50%) my monitor went blank completely. But laptop was working normal/as usuall so i waited to end the installation (about 3 minutes) and then i just restarted my laptop and click Brink and started playing this awesome game

Seriously though, both of my problems where PC problems obviously, needed the hotfix (apparently) and the second was just a conflict, also i think my catalyst is older version, not the latest, where do i check wich version it is?(looking but can’t find atm).

Hope this helps others with similar problem though.

(Eresis) #14

My Catalyst version (the one BRINK finally works with) is

2010.0920.2143.37117

Apparently older catalyst version works…wow.

(jfunk) #16

Awesome, glad you were able to get it working.

The reason you both had success with older ATI drivers is probably due to being on mobile GPUs. Proper support on these can be finicky and easily broken due to their frequently being modified from their reference design by the laptop manufacturer. So it’s not really uncommon for the latest driver release (especially something like a hasty hotfix) to not work properly with mobile adapters.

At this point it’s just great to know you can use the generic ATI drivers at all. That’s often not the case (Toshiba is particularly bad about this), so sometimes you’re just stuck with several year old drivers that the manufacturer has no intention of ever updating again. It’s one of the primary concerns with gaming on a laptop.

Anyway, hope you enjoy and don’t run into many of the other problems affecting ATI users right now. I’d be interested to hear what kind of performance you guys get on that 5650 too.

Yep,i’m certain it is as you say.
For the performance: How you check fps ingame?
I don’t remember any option in menu.
Well in most games i’m around 20 fps wich i think is good,at least ok for laptop.
Thanks again m8,appriciate it!

Hey do you mind posting exactly where you found the drivers? Im having some trouble uninstalling drivers as well if someone can tell me how.

My driver is Intel HD graphics btw.

You’d get the latest drivers for that from Intel’s website, here:

You’ll need to know specifically which Intel graphics you have and select it from the list there.

That being said, Intel graphics chips are WAY below the minimum requirement for Brink, so I’m not sure you will be able to play even if you get the latest installed.

(TimAres) #20

would there be any way to get another graphics chip?
