The New Tutorial: Thoughts/Discussions

(Loafus) #1

The new tutorial is out!! Well… at least for half of the player-base. Luckily, I was part of that half, so I wanted to say my thoughts on it. First of all, the atmosphere is much better, Mercserv HQ is a much better depiction of Dirty Bomb’s current status and desire for the future. From the semi-futuristic skyscraper, to the wall of weapons like in CS:GO’s tutorial, to even having some mercs wonder the building (Vasilli and Proxy), this tutorial is much better for conveying the setting of Dirty Bomb.

However, I understand you people want to know what it teaches, and I believe the changes were for the best. The shooting range is back, and now there are moving targets in the environment, and the shooting range changes settings due to some holographic technology, allowing for more settings and roles to be conveyed. The Tutorial skips over the aura segments (and bushwhacker if you were expecting him too), yet there is some mention of healing stations and defensive abilities, and the new tutorial teaches how to play the objective better. They give the players a run through of an EV objective, where you have to practice every scenario when pushing an EV, starting with you defending a proxy from test dummies on the map, then letting you repair it yourself (stating that the objective specialists should take priority in this task), and finally escorting it down the road, having access to both the turret on the EV and your normal loadout to kill dummies as you move down the alley. The ending has skyhammer (you), aura, and bushwhacker head out on a mission in central London.

My thoughts? This is a much better way of teaching players how to play skyhammer, shoot your guns, carry yourself in a map, and (Most Important) how to play the objective! It puts the player in settings they will be faced with, asking them to learn interactively with the tutorial. The one thing I would add is a reviving section, where you have to pick up proxy after being sniped, and the player revives her.

I actually had fun while going through it. It pretty much teaches the basics of how to play the game while keeping its humor that the DB mercs are known for.

Does this mysterious artist have a crush on the demon we call Proxy?

It’s definitely much better, and I love the amount of work that went into it.

Although honestly I do wish it were a little longer. There should be something about how medics work, because there are so many new players who don’t know what E does. You wouldn’t even have to play as aura really. Just watch her as she tap revives one person (maybe even the player to give them a first hand taste of a tap revive lol), who then gets instantly shot to death, then revives them again with a full charge and watch as they kill all the enemies.

Interesting how Skyhammer is in a picure at MercServ, even though this is apparently his first time there.

I really like the new tutorial as well. It feels more interactive and more fun to play through than the old one. It also really helps to flesh out the world of Dirty Bomb and provide some nice lore. I think that it could be expanded in the future to include a segment about reviving and health. Other than that i think this new tutorial is great. I love that they have a holographic proxy walking around and vassilli sitting on a bench talking to himself XD

I would have preferred that repairing the EV with Skyhammer would have been as slow as in the game and after a few seconds Proxy would have taken over again. Then Mia could explain that it’s nice that Skyhammer repairs when no engineer is around but upon Proxies return it’s prudent to stop repairing and cover the engineer again.

As it stands, the tutorial is not going to prevent any multi repairs.

The guy in the photo is actually his father, skydaddy. There’s a subtle difference between the two: skydaddy is loved cause he knows how to give ammo, and skyhammer is the noob we all hate.

It all makes sense now…
