The mysterious "ITEM 3 KEY"

While I was changing some controls, I’ve noticed there’s this “ITEM 3” button slot. Since mercs have 2 abilities with “ITEM 1” and “ITEM 2” button slot respectively. What’s with “ITEM 3”?

At one point all mercs had grenades in addition to their abilities.
