The most fundamental thing I am missing in DB

(onYn) #1

Okay, so we all discuss about objectives, maps, abilities, balance and all kinds of stuff that we think is important for the game to change. But I would actually like to focus on something that for me is the most important aspect of every game I play, and that is how I experience the core gameplay. For DB this core game play, will be the shooting and most of the stuff that comes with it. Because of that I would like to compare that to CS real quick.

So CS is basically a game I dislike a lot and if you look at what we expect from DB it has nothing like that. Ballanced maps? If the format wouldn´t be so forgiving to imbalanced maps, most of the maps would be a disaster. Ballanced guns? Probably don´t need to tell you, how few out of the many guns are really being used by people who know just a little about the game. And there are many other things we ask from DB, that CS is missing. Still CS is so successful that we wish DB could become at least 1/5 as good.

So why is it like that? Well first of all, CS has a vivid and competitive community - what mostly comes from the game being somewhat consistent throughout it´s versions. That´s quiet an assumptions, but I think that over 80% of CS:Go players actually know CS from prior versions, and I think that a lot fewer would actually play the game if CS:GO would have been the first version. Valve also did also implement some very interesting features like gun skins, etc. But I don´t feel like that´s the key factor. For me the key factor is, that once I am in the game, no matter how much I like some of it´s basic game mechanics, I enjoy the shooting. I enjoy to simply compete aim wise with other people, and I like to do that in a responsive way. When I hop on CS and what to play casually I don´t give a **** about balance, game mechanics or the overall heavily tactic focused gameplay, maps etc. I just enjoy the shooting.

Can someone tell me then, why I can´t enjoy the shooting in DB? Most feedback suggests that the maps suck, the objectives are bad, and the teamplay isn´t being rewarded that much at all due to the fact that everyone can do most of the stuff for himself… but that´s mostly aspects that come into organized play, what honestly isn´t the case right now. And even tho I support most of the generals opinion about those topics, sometimes I honestly don´t care even a little bit about them. Sometimes I don´t need to setup some proper team compositions, sneak some crazy routes to do objectives, organize my attacks on the objective to actually have some fun (things I honeslty couldn´t do even if I wanted sadly…), I only want to shoot, hop arround, pewpew… run forward pewpew even more… And even tho my expectations are so low in that mood, I still struggle to enjoy it - and no it´s not due to the shooting format, that I heavily prefer over something like CS, COD or BF…

well. this hugely depends on fps and laggs.
if i have 200+ fps and server doesnt lag. then i kinda get a nice pewpew feeling.
but only with Proxy at close/mid range.

Every patch it takes me a few days to get used to the new weapon mechanics (this one is no exception, was awful on the whole bar Proxy’s SSG and the 3-burst smg I got for Fragger). Like Glottis said above, when the server isn’t laggy as hell I generally have a good time with the gunplay (bar some of the massive recoil pistols). 8v8 Bridge is always a nightmare as my fps drops to 40 odd and it becomes impossible to track players but with up to 5v5 its generally ok.

Bushwhacker feels about the best in terms of primary weapon, and can’t deny the guilty pleasure of mowing down a load of players with Rhino ;).

Those guns skins are more important than you think source

If your looking solely at the guns in DB vs other games then imo the biggest factor is the audio followed by the recoil. In games like BF & CoD the audio is really satisfying. DB guns sound and feel like peashooters. This feeling is not helped by the higher TTK & RoF.

EDIT: After watching some gameplay vids of higher RoF guns from other games, I can’t really say DB is any different. Maybe it’s just the huge amount of bullets you need to pump into an enemy. Or the silly hitbeep sounds in DB (don’t remove them). I definitely prefer the lower RoF weapons in DB.

Looks like lots of sales, free weekends, regular updates and developer love; does work after all.

I still believe the overdone colorscaling is hurting. It’s a subtle effect, like walking around with tinted glasses, take em off and you feel instantly better.

colorgrading 2 in the console.

(ailmanki) #8

I do know, but I think tis should be available inoptions menu

I don´t think anyone is able to put that concretely. There´s just too many fidgeting variables that decide how satisfying the shooting is.

COD has amazing gun-play. In the sense that each weapon behaves exactly how the player think it should behave. But keep in mind that Infinity Ward had invested an enormous amount of R&D in getting that aspect of the game right.

To expect a couple of alpha testers to achieve the same thing is too much asked. There’s just too much subjectivity and gut-feelings muddying the discussion.

If everyone is using colorgrading 2 I think this need to be available in option menu, or modify the colorgrading to fit what the the players want.

I wonder how you can say you dislike CS and enjoying the shooting at the same time. You play on Deathmatch server? I like them too.
Still DB has the best camera+weapons movement i’ve seen in years. Really immersive, dynamic, smooth etc. It’s really a pleasure to run and look at our character arms/weapons animation, aiming etc. And it’s 60fps (for me) with all vids features activated. So DB has quite a great work there.

BUT, it drops my mood when it comes to the shooting itself. Game turns out to be more like Q3Arena in close quarter, and long range never get an end cuz headshots does not exist even with smg, pistols etc. And i mean Headshots cuz it’s, to me, the biggest difference between this game and other such as BF, CSS etc. Dirty Bomb has the worst headshot hitbox in the world, or the most solid skull i’ve ever come across in a fps. I like css headshots. I played years to get used to aim it, and when i play DB ain’t no headshot, no matter the distance. I touch, i sincerely touch the d@mn heads, but it wont kill for whatever ttk reason. It’s hard enough to aim heads in the game (because players move quite fast, even at middle range), so i can’t stand that “nope” feel when i see i hit it.
E.T. was never about headshots feeling, but DB is tied for CSS damage/shooting system in my opinion. I so want to mix them both!

SD has its reason i bet, they want it a bit casual. But because of that i can’t enjoy the game properly =/
