The Maze (alpha)

(LaggingTom) #1

My map is finally complete! It’s in the alpha stage, but the next version will have more details, and be darker. This is just before I add static lights. Also, the sky needs to be darkened, and sounds are being added as I write this. Enjoy yourselves!

Mind you, the hosting sucks, so probably only a select few will be able to download it.

Not yet… I’m currently mad at this version, a friend of mine got sick (dizzy, sweating, vommiting) playing it. I’m revamping the map to make it more appealing to the eye. Any suggestions would be helpful. Her exact post was:

"Yeah… I dont know why I can’t play things that are like that. It needs color, and other objects for me to play. The dimensions of any type of game (or map) like that makes me ill. Its like I’m going to have a seizure or something. Something to do with the way my eyes pick up things I guess. Thats why Im limited in the games I can play. Maybe I’ll try it again in window mode when you get it finished.

Pickle wasn’t meaning it in a bad way Tom… it was just the truth, I played it… then had to take aspirin and ended up in the bathroom trying to keep my dinner down."

As you may guess, I feel awful. Currently, I’m using gtkgensurf to tips so the walls aren’t flat. Any suggestions at ALL would be so very helpful, especcially ones on how to vary the colors.

I like what youve done with the objective. It’s nice to have a change from the usual blow stuff up/steal formula.

As you’ve said you are developing the maze itself still, I won’t comment on it too much. As it is, it wouldn’t make a fun game because everyone would be lost all the time. There needs to be more navigational aids.

I’m sad to say that this project has been terminated. The alpha that I released is the final. I’m currently working on a project that will surpass this one.

A realized that it’s rather hard to change the textures around in a pyramid, and most things are rather dull. So I’d like to thank you all for your support, and hopefully, you will all enjoy my next release (so far un-named, but it involves a speeding train, so I’m sure Schaffer will enjoy it).

Once again, thank you all.

It’s sad yeah but I can tell you that most mappers will scrap a lot more than 1 map

I’ve stopped counting

The key to mapping is Preparation. And even when you think you are really prepared there’s something that comes into play that will make you swear, hit your head on the wall, etc But the more prepared you are, the better.

Don’t give up, it’ll all come together sooner or later, hopefully on that next project  OTOH, nothing stops you from picking it up from where it is now later on. The heart of mapping is learning

(LaggingTom) #11

True that, MadJack. Always love your words of the wise  And I did learn a lot from this map, mainly to hope it won’t make people woozy. But it was my first, and will not be my last.

However, if I do decide to pick it back up, it will be from the start. I’m tired of the layout, tired of it all, and in need of some new ideas in my mind.

(MadJack) #12

There’s one thing I learned when I started mapping and it’s that I absolutely have no creativity in inventing architectures so I try to find an interesting subject and get some info from the web about it. As with Eben Emael, I picked the subject on a war related site from which I searched the net, finding some descriptions and pics…

The first map I made was real fun but was totally impossible to play  It was barely high enough to walk into and had a rotating platform and it was simply hell  That was in 1999 iirc…

I wouldn’t release any map and I still would be happy because I’m a learning addict. I have to constantly learn something, anything and mapping is a great outlet for that. There’s so much things to learn… Anyway, I’ll stop the ramblings

(LaggingTom) #13

Well, have you figured out 3-point clipping yet? There’s something to learn.

(MadJack) #14

Yeah  Don’t worry about that

(eRRoLfLyNN) #15

Can you figure out why my soul feels so bad :frowning:

Oops!

(eRRoLfLyNN) #16

Seriously Tom, sad to hear that, hope you get some new ideas & inspiration soon. And try not to vomit on yourself while constructing your new venture. People tell me it is real smelly and that it puts a lot of strain on social situations. So they tell me anyway.

It is a common thing for people to have motion sickness from fps games.
Don’t take it to heart that it is necessarily your map.

Also, another good consideration for scrapping a map project, is at the rate in which you learn. You learn so much during a first project, you’re a lot better off moving on with your newly adapted skills than trying to go back and fix a ton of brushes you did incorrectly.

Thanks all for your kind words. All the support is always welcome.
