The map I have been working on ....

(rmcnew) #1

I am probably definatelly going to be releasing today for those who have been waiting to have a look at it. I’m sure you guys are going to like it, some aspects of it are almost lifelike…

Just need to find a place to host the map and will give a link [it’s 30 some odd megabytes]

I’m sure you guys will not be disapointed …

You can upload at http://www.pcgamemods.com/
And 30 MB ?
That’s pretty much.
Do you have zipped / packed the pk3 file?

(rmcnew) #3

I know, it has a lot of graphics and sounds … You can probably tell by these pictures that this isn’t an ordinary map …

LOLOLOL HAHAHAHA!
Ok, those image links don’t work for me but…
when I visit the site they’re on… it tells me that they are inaccessible.
I was going to upload the picture of the error message here to show you what I mean, but when I right-clicked and went to save image, it saved the image that you meant us to see :stuck_out_tongue:

{Edit}Hmmm, the links seem to work now :S lol, maybe it was just me…{/Edit}

(rmcnew) #5

And no, that’s not zipped … just pk3ed … I can probably tweek it to get it smaller if I recovert some of the graphics if people don’t want to play it because it is too large. As it is the graphics are very crisp …

(Mr_Tickles) #6

IMO pk3’s should be large… It shows the mapper has put in extra effort… or at least included more. So therefore it is of more interest to us players, no?
If it’s just a one time download thing, what’s the problem with the size? I really don’t get this?
Ok, so if you’re on a server and it suddenly wants you to download it, fair enough, it can be annoying. Either be patient, or go download it previously!
Come on, it’s just a one time thing! Is it better to have a slightly larger (one time) download, or constantly play on a map that doesn’t reach it’s potential?

(eRRoLfLyNN) #7

Do you have any more screenshots ??

(rmcnew) #8

Well, I will be releasing the map within a few hours anyways, but since you asked …

(rmcnew) #9

Come to think of it you are right … It’s getting now to where a lot of dial-upers are the odd men out anyways, so why not? I personally wouldn’t want to downgrade the graphics to make it smaller unless it benefitted everyone to do that, but it’s not so might as well leave it like it is.

(Mr_Tickles) #10

Well, I don’t know how well the game would play over dial up anyway :S (Sorry to all of those who aren’t on a faster connection).
But even if it’s bad, the quality of the map shouldn’t affect it’s communication with the server… so basically, it’s the same point as my previous post.

Hey! That’s looking very damn nice! I’m gonna downloa as soon as you upload :stuck_out_tongue:

(Ifurita) #11

Disagree. 30 Mb is over the top IMO.

You don’t need 30 Mb to show off quality work, which is ultimately going to be measured in gameplay. There are a ton of very good, very high quality maps, with custom content that still run in the 5-8 Mb range. Cathedral comes to mind and is less than 6 Mb in size.

The Market Garden port is ~30 Mb and they included all of the sounds, models, and textures from RTCW.
The Breakout port is ~16 Mb and includes a bunch of new textures and custom sounds

If the map is truely 30 Mb, then I’m expect super high quality new content that is absolutely critical to the map and not simply bloat.

(rmcnew) #12

If I took out the models and pics I use I can probably get it down to half of it’s size … The problem is that the map would look really bland if I did that, which is why I added the pics and the models to begin with.It might just be me, but I like to see maps that look like someone actually lives in them and not vacant spaces and bland walls.

(zl1corvette) #13

Looks a little dark IMO, but that might just be the screens.

(Ifurita) #14

It really depends on why it’s 30 Mb. Did you include misc_models? If so, remove them, they aren’t needed in the PK3. Used super large TGAs instead of JPGs? You can probably swap those out with no loss of quality. Included your PRT and BAK files? Get rid of them. If you used a really small lightmap scale for everything, that can also result in a very large pk3. How many custom pics did you include, at what size, and in what format?

(rmcnew) #15

Ok guys, I did some work on the pk3 and I was able to get the filesize down to a miore managable 16 megabytes with some TGAs that actually improved their quality when I converted them to jpegs [,ironic?] Anyways, I will be back in a few minutes to post a link as I am going to upload this to somewhere right now …

(Ifurita) #16

w00t

good work. You can upload files for free at PCGameMods.com

30 mb to 16mb ? I feel like I am in an info-mercial…hehe.

[commercial]
How many megs would you expect this map to be ?

30 ? …not today!!!
25 ? …sounds ok…but NO!!
20? …I think we’ve lost our minds!!!
Today only…16 mb !!![/commercial]
I thought it was funny…

There is still a lot of fat you could cut out:

Your 3 command maps could be made jpgs at twice the size (512 x 512) and a quarter of the size
Not sure what topsound is, but that is 2.5 Mb
The thumbs.db can be ditched
Your sky texture can be made a jpg
The biggest source of bloat seems to be the Opel Blitz models. I’ll assume that you removed all of the models and model textures you don’t need, but you could still get someone to remap and convert the graphics to jpgs for you.

Take a look at Dubrovnik, Firefly remapped the model textures for the WP222 and Tiger I tank and the result are models that are only a fraction of the size of the original

(rmcnew) #20

The wav file [topsound] I can’t do much more with; it’s the sound with the bird’s chirping and an occasional crow’s call … It use to be nine megabytes and I was able to get it down to two without sounding too redundant …

I wasn’t sure what to do with the model … I tried to turn the tga’s into jpegs and it gave me an error … I’ll have a look at that map to see if I can discover a way, though.
