The "Lets all b*tch about college" thread.

Howdy.

I was just wondering how many people here on the forums are currently drudging through college like myself. If you feel so inclined;

Where are you attending? Did you move miles and miles?

Whats your major?

Your ideal career path?

Your least favorite prereq class that you honestly have no reason to be in/had taken.

Any classes that took you by surprise? Didn’t hate underwater basket weaving as much as you thought you would?

What about college life just pisses you off?

I suppose i’ll go first. Im a sophomore student at Marshal University, applying for pharmaceutical school in a years time. As such I don’t technically have a major, because MU is weird about how they do that sort of thing. Im looking to go into emergency pharmacy, which is a far cry from the retail pharmacy most people are likely exposed too. (I secretly want to be Phoenix but am too lazy for med school.)

Least favorite class by far is chem 111. I’m a damn science major. This class is for people who have never taken any science classes. Why am I here? Seriously, the first two weeks of this class were covered in 30 minutes in bio 120, I’m being 100% serious. Its a total joke. A nice professor and all…but…just…why?

Up to a close second is Trig. Honestly. Fuck trig. I know im supposed to be the “smart” guy (which is bull shit), having always done well in math and science, but trig can kiss my gluteus maximus. Cos x is not an answer. I cannot have cos x apples in my hand. If you have cos x apples, you may need to see Sawbonez for a head exam.

Philosophy was awesome. I was expecting some pretty serious BS, but instead ended learning about rhetoric. Ironically, he taught me more about it then my English classes did. One of the few classes that I actually learned something most people would deem “practical”.

You know what! So way if I failed grade 5! So what if I never passed elementary! How dare they decline me! I am a member of society, and I have the right to take up law school!

1 Junior at University of Nevada, in Reno, only two hours drive from home.

2 Material Science and Engineering, with an emphasis in Nuclear Engineering.

3 No real goals here now, get an internship at a national lab, figure things out from there. Avoid super complicated reactor physics.

4 Physics 122 and my first Statics class. I had learned everything from those classes in high school physics and AP physics classes.

5 The one required English class I had to take is supposed to be on a class specific topic, but there was an error in the online sign ups so it was listed as a different topic than the actual one. Instead of being about American History, like 90% of the class was expecting it to be on the first day, we were informed all our writing topics would be on body modification. I ended up learning a ton of interesting stuff that semester and it was a lot more entertaining than a US history class would have been. I ended up writing my final paper on steroids.

6 Worst part about college is realizing you’ve failed a class, that moment you wake up three hours after you were supposed to be at an exam, and you do the math and come up a few points short of being able to pass the class. So you bang your head against a wall and then get over it.

Is that something that actually happens?

It’s not helping me feel confident at all for University (or college as you guys call it)

/didn’t go to college
/went to vocational school instead
/learned a job in 3 years

It can. I’ve not done it, but it happens all the time.

I’m not in college yet…

College is like University, right? It’s all a bit different over here, across the big blue sea.
My major is IT, or as you sometimes call it Computer Science and the ideal career path is either into science and research, probably for a private company, or something along the lines of gaming, because why not.

Meh, worst prereq class was my psychology (we have to choose one non-IT set of lectures in the 4th semester and I so happened to choose that stuff). Absolutely no scientific basis, no proof for anything, only statistical ‘evidence’. Another pain in the ass was Technical IT, MOSFETs and all that, not that interesting for me.
A big surprise for me was that after I actually started studying to go into driver/OS development or thelike I’ve grown to love theoretical IT, description logics, machine learning are 2 of my 3 chosen lectures this semester, especially research into AI got me hooked up. What took me by surprise was Theoretical IT/Logics, it’s the biggest ‘throwout’ exam, busting people every year and I managed to do it without learning much and without going to the 2nd half of the lectures, I have a hand for formal language and all that theoretical stuff.

What pisses me off is paperwork, it’s a pain in the ass in germany.

When I was in college, I took a summer class (condensed semester) mon-thur 8am-12. Was told on day 1, “Do not miss these two classes”. Those two classes happened to be a Thursday and following Monday. I was at class everyday at 7:45am the entire semester… except those two days.

On the Thursday class I woke up at like 11am (I NEVER sleep late >_<) but was lucky enough to catch the 1-5 class. So over the weekend I download an mp3 alarm clock app on my computer, cranked my 5.1, set three alarms on my phone and two on my alarm clock. Mind you, all of these were staggered, amazingly loud and across the room.

Come Monday, I woke up that at 1:30pm. All alarms were silenced / snoozed / muted. I some how managed to get out of bed some 6 times and effectively turn off all my alarms without ever actually waking up. And to top it off, I missed being able to attend the 1-5 class.

Luckily it didn’t fail me, but it sure could have.

As someone who once woke up at 7:00, got dressed, ate breakfast and went outside for the bus only to see it not come at all. Did I miss it? Wait, holy shit its dark out. looks down at phone

Its actually 3 AM. I was sleep walking the entire time.

I totally understand you.

In physics non the less. Over here in the states that’s a pretty competitive field. Way to get the shank.

Where are you attending? Did you move miles and miles?
I’m at a local university in Australia. Takes roughly half an hour to get there (god bless)

Whats your major?
In a heavy design course. Magazines, printing, special effects, graphics, the whole shebang

Your ideal career path?
I’ll take any job that pays okay. Currently working as a part time comic artist for an independent publisher for the past two years.

Your least favorite prereq class that you honestly have no reason to be in/had taken.
Web design is a coded nightmare

Any classes that took you by surprise? Didn’t hate underwater basket weaving as much as you thought you would?
I LOVED MY EXTRA FX CLASS!!! Got to do stuff like this

What about college life just pisses you off?
P e o p l e

(SteelMailbox) #18

I actually learned web design
Can confirm it is a coded nightmare.

(HoakinBlackforge) #19

That fucking daily mission sucks ass, they need to remove it or rework it.

Hey, for me it might have a 120k yearly credit payoff.

Assuming I dont like…mix the Viagra and the heart medication. Should be fine.
