The Icarus ruined Quakewars, just like skiing ruined Tribes

(datoo) #61

lol, same. If indeed all this talk comes to fruition.
This is the main reason I was actually quite glad when QW got delayed. I need to get my shit together before this game comes out. Sad but true.

This news about Tribes is awesome. I really see QW getting huge, especially in competitive play, which is great for everyone.

(Struggle) #62

And/Or, why cant you Splash Damage that have skills and all. Do a tribes inspired game, or a sequel to tribes. You could call it something else or what ever. There is a great tribes community “and a new one” that would reallly look into it, you make great publicity make and awsome tribes game and give it the attention that quakewars gets in media etc. And you have a winner.

Is english your first language, Struggle?

Ye’s ,she “is”. But! he struggle’s from it.
get it? struggles? Struggle?

Chances are that Crysis is going to be a shitty game, for the simple reason that EA is involved. Why is it that they somehow break every good idea they touch?

(Red Emperor) #66

Crysis might be a shitty game but after seeing it at E3 I have no doubt it would be a fantastic engine for a tribes like game . Also I did some mod work in the Cryengine 1 and eventually they had good mod tools and the engine was fantastic . I was just thinking more along the lines of how awesome Tribes would be with all that destructable fooliage and the excellent physics that I seen the game have . Really though just about any next-gen game engine would be great especially Unreal and Cryengine .

EA’s games suck because they are design by commitee . It’s like that movie office space . Imagine being a producer or an art director on a game for EA and you have literally 5-10 people above those people who have to approve every little thing in the game . All of which have there own idea of what a cool game is and what gamers want in a game . Management hell is why EA sucks ! On the other hand I guess they do just good enough to fool the general public into thinking the next Harry Potter or James Bond game is going to be great and they sell 5 million copies of each . They must be doing something right ?

you just described my working environment. the only ones who are working and who’s work you see in real world is my team, what the rest “above us” does, i have no idea. but hey, someone has to earn money so that there can be an “average salary of 4.000,- euro” in my department, all i know it’s none of my team. no wonder that my company is expensive. but as we are “expensive” my programmer job will soon be passed on to some cheaper chinese or romanian workers. of course quality will suck and none of the higher management will be fired, who’d fire themselves? … speaking of “management hell”. it’s not a comedy movie at all, it’s real life.

what EA management is doing right? they’re having a big commercial engine which actually works. every few weeks they release info about bf2142, screenshots, trailers, etc. i don’t see that from e.g. quake wars. eg EA has a lot of info about their games in german magazines, you hardly hear anything from quake wars in german magazines. last one was an exclusive article in pc action, the one before i don’t know. was it in january?

and quakecon? quakecon didn’t exist for the masses. if it weren’t for planetquake4.net we wouldn’t have had any info at all. where are the activision movies? where are the id movies? nothing! it looks like they rely on the fans and the “spoken word” for commercials. and still activision hasn’t sent me any newsletter for which i registered about a year ago. i want spam!

but after all it’s none of my business.

Hello to all, I just had to register myself after reading all this…I have been playing tribes(t1 and t2classic) for 7 years (althought I don’t play it very often right now because it’s almost dead) and ,as the others, I must tell that I am very excited to hear that 1)Some developers read and answer in a forum(believe me, this is not so common).2)some developers are interested in supporting the modding community saying that they also could help with maps/code.3)Tribers’ hopes will never die :stuck_out_tongue:

QW was maybe the only multiplayer game I had interests into(not much I must say, because i have almost lost faith in mulitplayer gaming in last 2-3years, because of monotony, dejavu sensations and market laws that are killing original ideas). Now i have some serious hopes that I’ll like it very much, and not only because of the possible tribes mod. Seeing that devs care about their community and their game is a very comfortating news to me, especially after seeing the support VUG gave to T:V(which hadn’t one patch ever).

For ppl in the thread that doesn’t know tribes or have just played t:v believe me…I have played seriously(in several clans)counterstrike,ET,quake3,UT,DOD,COD,and simply I didn’t managed to have the same level of fun and teamwork i had with tribes. And I hate t:v(it had a lot of possibilites, but as it is right now it just isn’t a good game).
This is obviously MY opinion, so I don’t pretend you will just believe it. But I just want you to don’t comment on tribes series if you haven’t played it seriously.
best luck for your incoming title

p.s: english isn’t my mother language, so don’t complain on it pls

Disclaimer: I don’t speak for any developer as I’m not part of them.
I think they will support all mods by helping to solve problems along the way, but I do wonder if they’ll have the time to participate in a mod team. Though I do like them for all those snippets of code, map prefabs and what not…

Well, I hope that you like W:ET’s gameplay. And welcome to the forums and the ET community.

(FeaRog) #70

Indeed we do - after all (and I think I speak for us all when I write this), we want people to love our game and play it for years, and the key to longevity is a strong, supported community!

for the first statement, you are saying(better) what i wanted to say…i just mentioned the “maps/code” because I read about it in some posts before, but I sure know that they won’t have much time and that the “big” work will be based on community efforts.

for the second quote, sure i did, that’s because i played in some clans and that’s because I still have hopes about this game(hopes that I don’t have on similar projects, like bf2142 and so on)

:drink:

(madness) #72

It’s good to know there are still some nice game companies out there!

(Wils) #73

I think the word your looking for is naive, not nice

(Sauron|EFG) #74

Getting ppl to buy your game because they want to play a mod that other people (mostly) developed for free != naive

(revenant) #75

There looks like some definate interest in creating a ET:Tribes varient of game in several communites.
Theres some discussion on TribalWar which could be interesting (sorry if OFN):

FeaRog (and other interested members) - it sounds like you are interested in getting something going in terms of a tribes-like mod. I and a few others at TW
share this interest, im keen to establish a website/forum etc (ill build/pay for it) in order to perhaps facilitate something of the sorts.
IMO to really work a core team of dedicated people needs to be formed (with good coordination) to create at first a basic perhaps T1 LT style game, to get
the basic feel right, and then develop and add content to create a whole new game, as I see no future in a T1 with better graphics
style of mod. People need something new, its no longer 2001.

PM me (here or at TW) or email revenant40k@hotmail.com if you would be keen to get something going.

(mortis) #76

I am willing to host a development BB, and I’m pretty sure bani would too. ETpro forums are the best place IMO, but I’ll glady set up a subdomain at quakewarsterritory.com if people want it.

(Struggle) #77

Sorry about my bad english before, i was very tired.

And no english isn´t my first language, im from Sweden.

So please, be gentle

(Wils) #78

Guys, if it isn’t already obvious, I don’t think we’re particularly interested in using an entirely new website or irc channel on a different irc network when we have our own website and forums and already use quakenet

(Panda_Star) #79

and imo gameplay killed tribes. it’s just like quake 4 only short-time fun, nuthin’ you can play for hours a day like eg ET.
that was tribes vengence both Tribes one and tribes 2 had very diverse and unique gameplay and easily could hook you for hours apon hours of fun.

(Panda_Star) #80

Ok I think I’ll field this one (I’m the programmer that added skiing to the Icarus):

 • The code that handles the Icarus physics is in the part of code that should be released in the SDK, so it is totally moddable. I made an effort to make the code pretty clean too, so it shouldn’t take much too effort to change the feel of it to whichever Tribes you like
 • A CTF gametype should be very easy to mod in - just a different setup for map scripting really, and a few new entity types.
 • Spinfusor mod would be super-duper-easy - could mod one of the existing weapons to behave just like it in under an hour, probably more like 10 minutes if they’re familiar with the way it all works

I was fully expecting (and hoping!) that someone would do a Tribes mod when I was writing the skiing code. As it currently stands it is a more noob-friendly form of skiing (more T:V-esque), which was done in an effort to make it actually usable for people that aren’t part of the Tribes-hardcore community

I’m intending to kick-start any Tribes mod’s development after release myself by integrating the player & Icarus physics and reworking the skiing to be more like T1 (my favourite). I’d then release that code to the public so y’all can take it from there - I’m a Tribes fanatic from way back so I’d love to see a decent Tribes mod for the game! Most of the groundwork is all there - easily moddable weapons, character classes, vehicles, support for massive terrains, etc. With the kickstart of the physics then I’m convinced that a dedicated team could whip out a prototype Tribes mod in a pretty short timespan.

Cmon! Spread the word! Make it happen! “Enemy Territory: Tribal War” ;)
just out of curiosity what was your Tribes moniker?
