The fact that et is dying

(Indloon) #21

It is blind choice to say that Wolf:ET is not dying.

The amount of players is decreasing from day to day. And there are a lot of reasons for that.

The modding community isn’t that active as it has been past years.

The competitive side is literally dead, some LAN parties are but that’s it, it won’t last forever.

  1. No, the rendering itself is garbage.

  2. Yes. :penguin:

  3. No, the admins can ruin a game easily. In-game mail is pointless, player wants to play game not send emails. For that there are chatting programs as Xfire,Steam.

  4. No, it is pointless. It is same as using 1861 Reis telephone instead of Samsung Galaxy S.
    Solution: Auto-updater.

  5. ETpub mod is great, but can You give the examples of crap mods?

  6. So how do you install newer/updated ET if you download the 2.55 or 2.60 patch? Nonsense D:

(Mateos) #22

“Getting old” is a better term than “dying” nope?

There’s little inter-clans Scrims which seems still quite active.

Ah, and Xf has a varaible to be disabled while playing ETpro; So the messaging system (/m, /ma) is a good feature imo.

(nonoMapper) #23

Summertime is also an important factor so i wont take it too serious.
In the summertime i often saw people say goodbye to the game and hello to normal life and came back when it got cold

@Mateos, good way to put it:)

(dutchmeat) #24

Can’t say that much, but Apologet and I are working on an exciting ET project which we hope to beta test at the end of the year.
So, keep faith and keep on playing,

(Indloon) #25

Depends
But still there will be a death at the end of the oldness. You can’t escape from that! :frowning:

@Dutchmeat
Let me guess, it is ETLive?

Yeh you cannot escape, the game can;)
…it would be a long time though

(Mateos) #27

Well, still playing games such as Doom I/II and Duke Nukem 3D, GOG.com has his success… But this has been already discussed thousand times.

ET is part of Internet, and that way will always exists, played or not =D

(acQu) #28

I think he means just pure graphics, not performance. Because i still think ET graphics is very good and looks aesthetic, even compared to modern games it looks much better to me in most cases (depends on how you view it i guess).

Also: when will you quit playing the “talking potatoe” and just go and do something :stuck_out_tongue: I do not need XReal, but if you can improve performance that would be already great and all me personally wants. Unfortunately i have no clue about rendering, so maybe you can tell us what is so bad about it. I guess it is that CPU bottleneck you are talking about and what i heard/read somewhere. Is simply porting ET to directx11 a big problem ? Probably breaks all that shader stuff, no ? Also i am not sure if you would need licence or pay money to use directx 11.

(Mateos) #29

He said in details what is “garbage” in the past, and developed the post at his maximum once… But can’t tell you on which thread, maybe on OpenWolf or?

DX11? Why? It would need a far better computer to run -_-

(acQu) #30

Well i have no clue  But i think on it this way:

Directx9 has 9 in there.
Directx11 has 11.
11 > 9 = win

(Mateos) #31

And only modern graphic cards supports DX11 (And “modern” OS…) ^^

For instance my PC would not run ET if it were running only in DX11. I prefer not think about that o.o And I had to update my drivers to run ETXreaL.

Each DX version adds new things; I think bump mapping is supported since DX 6 or 8 (I said supported, not fully handled ^^), AA and HDR have been added in DX9, etc etc; Then each new version requires more ressources.

(stealth6) #32

I don’t like any of the features added after DX9 for an FPS game, I prefer a wall being a wall and not some kind of weird spongy stuff you can half walk through.

Terrain never feels solid in new games.

Gameplay > Graphics

(Mateos) #33

Tell CoD customers about this :stuck_out_tongue:

There is a Tr3b’s Xreal engine and you really should look at.

Also Dushan has done great work on OpenWolf which is based on Xreal engine.

I have made a post before, little talk about ID3 rendering:
http://forums.warchestgames.com/showthread.php/25718-Engine-Bugs-Quirks-and-Workarounds?p=403121#post403121

Maybe Tr3b has to something add about it, if he is around here!

No, I think, not familiar with Direct3D.

OpenGL > Direct3D, because of cross platform, I would like to see happy MacOS, Linux and WinOS users

However, OpenGL is only a graphical API, Direct3D is a API which contains of other APIs as font rendering, texturing, math lib … etc.
You must mix OpenGL with OpenAL, Freetype 2, jpeglib, GLM, GLEW … etc to get it working first.

Well, the better way is to remove the shaders for maps and work out new map type or use Doom3 kind map and make new level designer tool as Cryengine 3 has( yeah Crytek fan over here! ).

I think Direct3D11 is free to use?

@ Indloon
lol ET graphics are not garbage. However I can say that roughly 99% of all the attempts to mod these graphics look ridiculous.
Trying to “mod” our way to a new ET is a fantasy. And I feel bad for all the people that believe that and waste their time trying to accomplish that goal. During that wasted time they could have gone to school and earned a few degrees or something. So sad.
The only way that ET will take off again is if id or some other professional organization starts a new project, maybe even a for-profit project. It would have to be 100% new, and not recycle anything.
The good news is, ET is just fine the way it is. As long as people address issues that arise (i.e., etkey, masterlist…etc) it will always have a following. It may not be as big as the it was in the late 2000s, but it will be here.

(Mateos) #36

ID isn’t Activision. If a new game is released, it will need new things. It will need modern graphics. Or it will be a fail. And please read again Indloon post, and see that graphics and rendering are a different thing.

Bad news is that ET is hard to access for new players, so if we have people stopping playing, there will not be enough to replace them… Slowly decreasing in size.
