The Drought Between Major Updates

(TheStrangerous) #1

It’s no secret, that in order to keep players interested, major groundbreaking updates need to happen.

How would you rate the frequency of major updates of 2016 in comparison to 2015? Was SD workin’ hard enough? Had too little resources? Not enough employees?

Sadly I didn’t get to experience 2015 DB updates, as I joined really late, at the end of 2015. I’m really curious how was it like, with major updates in 2015.

Define Major? Every 2 weeks there was a patch. One fine tuning and then one content. So a content patch per month(usually, like I said).

New mercs, new maps, new gen cards.

For a lot of 2015 it was a merc a month(usually). The only new maps besides dome were the execution maps. There were never any new cards besides when they removed the throwing knife augment way back.

Obviously the release rate has slowed so far this year. That was expected because they announced the change. Most of the mercs existed before the open beta and just got minor tweaks before being released to the public. It isn’t like they have a team the size of Riot and can put out multiple mercs a month(or even one from scratch).

I hope they pick up the pace. I really appreciate all the small updates like the case a day and such, but I do agree, to spark interest, more needs to be done.

But hey, the year is not over yet. We cannot properly judge the frequency of major updates. I, on the other hand, have really high hopes for DB for 2016. Lets hope all of our wishes come true.

New maps are incoming.

At least 1 new merc is on the way.

One of each , every other month for the rest of the year- would that be a good content year?

(everlovestruck) #7

I really hope they have something big for us this summer. Come on, it’s common knowledge that most players are on vacation (except for the workers, sigh)

I’m not sure it’s fair to criticise the rate of the map development by SD - looking at what they’ve got so far for Gallery they’ve done an amazing job making it look unique and not just fabricated from existing assets, and I sure want that to continue. That said I can’t help but feel if we’re going to get 2 maps, one of which some players won’t even play, every 7 months that the players will start to get bored. I mean it’s not like we’ve got a pipeline of maps to expect, this is all I know about at the moment.

New mercs and other content I’m not particulary interested in, I just want more maps. The poll at the start of the year indicates that the community is at least somewhat in agreement here (67.7% of votes). If SD could introduce a game mode that recycles sectors of existing maps in new ways (Domination? CTF?) and start churning those out, that’d be really nice. I’m sure it was said that in the past some of the execution maps were cordoned off parts of other maps as well.

To be direct, the only thing that was hugely interesting so far in 2016 was the second gen of loadout cards, so while I’m not unhappy with the rate of progress, I’m starting to hunger for something new. More maps plz.

They are doing so many events, they cant release anything…

(TheStrangerous) #12

Oh summer time…

Why do major video games have to be released, either around May or November?
Least I hope something will happen during summer in DB. This season’s a huge drought when it comes to gaming :frowning:

(BananaSlug) #13

i thing big update is coming, the dusting system, screens from textured maps, maybe turtle
lets wait and pray

the updates are fine I think some people let the guise of the game being free to play influence a biased outlook on the games updates.

but as far as a free to play shooter goes the updates are decent.

I only wish they would do some more unveiling of stuff before it comes out (Sry but the Hype train is good for PR good for business).

I’d really enjoy it if the devs would talk to us a little more about their philosophies about dirty bomb or bounce more ideas off the community (like kiras katana I guarantee that was do to a lot of requests on the forums)

I totally understand what you’re saying. But having seen what some of your Co-NEXON FTP FPS are doing with 50+ maps and a lot of game modes (albeit direct rip-offs of Battlefield and COD game modes) I think we just have to acknowledge that the FTP Action Game market is weaned on games having a deluge of modes, maps, weapons.

But I know Splash Damage are building a different animal. However, like Bungie said at E3 “we all need to work on releasing new content faster”.

(watsyurdeal) #16

Splash Damage isn’t Bungie, they aren’t even close to that size. And more so they don’t have as much income or marketing for their games. So you can’t expect this stuff to just come out magically, it’s incredibly time consuming, which is why I get frustrated when this community asks for stupid crap we don’t need .

(TheGreatHoundini) #17

No I’m not asking it from Splash Damage. I’m just saying that’s where the market is right now. It’s like if you started a burger joint, and people ask why you don’t have 500,000 stocks of beef patties like McDonalds. Of course you can say: “I’m not as big as them! And I don’t use preservatives!” Yeah… but that’s the burger sandwiches business for ya. :stuck_out_tongue:

For the record I was suggesting “modular map elements” and that they could use a tool that quickly builds maps from pre-existing elements. It’s not easy, sure…and a lot of the maps will soon look like they had no Art Design work to them - like a bunch of boring Container Yard maps (why do you think Container Yards are so popular in FPS games?). Blocks that are just stacked here and there and that’s it… that’s a map.

But they need a way to make “filler”… even if it’s not at the same high standard as some of the other maps… That’s all I’m saying.
