BXpress: I have one request

Don’t block areas you don’t want people to go to with playerclips. SplashDamage did this a lot, and blocked off areas which potentially would have been tricky and fun to get to with various trick jumps, etc.

For example: It would be very hard to do, but it would be fun to get on top of the bridge itself. Don’t block that off with clips.

Do you understand what I mean about the lameness of blocking off things? One annoyance is how you can’t get to the lighthouse on the beach. I know we need to block off areas, but sometimes a different course of action is better… For example… On the beach map, if you swim out far enough, you just run into the ‘wall’ which is the clip they’ve put there. An alternative to this would be to take health away from the player, so the farther out they go, the more damaged they get. I don’t like blatant boundaries in games.

While I agree with the unnecessary clipping, I do think that not clipping most things is bad. Clip should be used for several things:

  • blocking off areas people can get trapped in
  • helping navigate around the map (eg wedges at narrow doors)
  • stopping people getting out of the main area

Now while many of the above can, to a certain degree, be rendered ´unecessary´ with level design, there are many times when it simply makes sense to clip things off, and there may not be an actual level alternative.

eg Helms deep - there´s really not a lot I could put at the valley end to stop players without looking more ridiculous than it currently does. How about a 50 foot high fence around the whole thing? :slight_smile:
Market garden (axis end) was one map where I truly believe the clipping (to keep inside level) was rubbish, but most maps aren´t as extreme as that. If there´s a reasonable height wall, then clip on top of it isn´t unreasonable because it´s quite clear you aren´t meant to be there.

I´d rather people did it the other way around - clipped everywhere properly and then deliberately left in a few choice hidden spots.

The biggest problem with allowing someone to get up there would be the view. If someone could get there, you would have to map the entire view from that perspective. That would hurt the performance of the map, and since the lighthouse is not part of the gameplay, it would be a complete waste. So I agree it would be “cool” to get up there, but at some point you have to set up boundaries to the map.

Exactly, but why put a cool lighthouse up there, just so the snipers have to drool at the prospect of sniping from there.

It looks cool, but it’s one of those, “I wish I wish I wish!” places.

The only annoyance to me would be goldrush. There are a lot of places where they’ve clipped too low, and you end up jumping up and hitting the clip, if you’re on top of someone else’s head.

well, first the good message, you can only hit the skybox when you stand on a Teammate on the top of the Bridge!
i think my Clip settings are good as they are…
but (now the bad message), i have to set some clips on the Border of the Map!
its just, without these clips you could just swim to the levels Boarder…
well, ok.
and i clipped the Rooftops! getting on the would be lame i think…
but otherwise… if i rethink… hmmm… :cool:

is this map ever going to be finished?
hmm… i think yes.
but not soon.
well, ok, my creativity has come back and has grown, in the last weeks.
when i am back on my Radiant, i will directly start working on Remagen.
becuz i want this map to be finished too ^^

Why is everyone so sorry for not speaking english well. SO F****** WHAT! I mean, like is it obligatory to have extremely rich vocabulary, and if you make several mistakes here and then will all the people who speak english as their first language feel offended?
English is here (on this forum) only becouse almost everyone understands it (or at least understands it better than some other languages). So why even bother writing some excuses. If people don’t understand yout, they will aska gain and if you’re not an english speaking subject, we’ll notice it too and frankly - I don’t care.
