"The Barracks" and classless objectives

Just curious on the direction of the “choose five” method. It doesn’t seem like picking one of each class is really necessary anymore. I sure like the healing station medic, but it can be frustrating when Sawbonez is so much better for transitions between establishing chokepoints.

Having the ability to switch between 5 characters seems awfully complicated for the spectator to follow, and pretty poor for the match-length progression of a Merc, though taking one per match may be a bit limiting to the flow of the game? Anyone have ideas to keep it simple and intuitive from an observer/sport perspective, and balanced and dynamic for the player?

Heh funny I feel the same way about the medics. I wish I could trade my recon for an extra medic slot so I could have both Sawbonez and Hardy available!

Maybe just have 3 slots for any characters, and you fill these slots when you join a game but before you start playing.

I know a lot of people have talked about character drafting and such also, though this seems like more of a competitive play feature that wouldn’t be used in pub games.

i dislike the cureent system too.
i would like to can choose class and characters ingame like i want.

at the moment i have a solider with grenade launcher and he is miost of the time useless

I believe in-game character changing will be coming into the game. We had it in the very early versions of the alpha but it was changed when we were focus-testing specific sets of mercs.

Let’s say it doesn’t change and we’re stuck with the Barracks switching only away from the server, then it is very odd that classes are being dismissed and that characters are becoming the more prominent term. At least I find it odd that you can only select 1 character per class :wink:

They should have it so you can select anyone you want (if they are unlocked), while at the same time having the 5 slots be “favorites” so you can quickly pick among the 5 (or more) you like quickly, but if you want someone else, you can look through the catalog then.

i dont understand how anyone can think that med is “OP”. if anything it’s closer to useless

The only real use I see is if you’re in a position where you’re taking lots of sniper fire, and that’s about it.

Can’t say that I agree with this comment! I tend enjoy playing this medic more than the other 2 types, I feel he’s more of a supporting role like a medic should be. He can back you up in firefights whilst healing you with his aura then when you go down, he’s there to pick you up. If he’s taken down, he’ll likely be in the background so he can self-revive when nobody else is there for him.

That’s the kind of situations I play in at least. Also, his revolver is awesome!

The revolver is really fun. I haven’t given Medic03 enough playtime, but I’ve gotten a few key points with the healing station down.

It’s not OP. I’ve seen it already and if anything over saturating them is really a poor choice. The funny thing is that people say X is OP and Y is OP and then X is weak and Y is weak. I think both are quite balanced and find both equally satisfying. It’s all about play style, which is what I’m enjoying about the character system. The only character that I’ve found to be considerably better than the rest in its category is the Fragger simply because his MG is so easy to use and is just as effective as Conker’s MG.

It is a possibility but not that likely. It all boils down to how each team wants to play and what map and objectives are present. Certain players might opt to go for the Concussion Grenade as a Soldier because they like it more even though the regular grenade might be more “powerful”. And some teams might opt to use molotov on their field ops because they don’t feel the need for the airstrike on that particular map, i.e. Camden.

I think the barracks has to move in that direction if we’re not having ‘classes’ any more. I find I only use BBQ & Ghostly (with the odd bout of T-Rat). Would be nice to use vassili again rather than having to pick a med / soldier char I never use. I’m guessing the barracks will have one or two chars initially and we will need to buy additional slots (rad-soldiers style) through real or grind-money ;).

it was only an example maybe an bad one. in mobas there are always the 10 champions which everyone picks.you cant balance 50 characters ,the people will need some weeks maybe and everyone uses the same stuff in competition.(because its to risky to take a other and not able to switch)
in Brink everybody used the light body type…
in LoL everybody plays a champ of a maybe 20 champs pool (LoL have 100+ champs)

as more as i playing as more im unsure if every skin should have every weapon.i think smth like a selfrevive medic shouldnt have a very strong weapon.

I just hope I can alternate between arty and skyhammer while in a match. I hope choose 5 doesn’t make me choose 1 of each class. Rather, choose any 5 characters I actually want to use.

Not true. In The International 3 (Dota 2) there were over 78 different heroes played in just the group stage. Mushi alone played 18 different heroes throughout the tournament. If the characters are designed properly, and combined with drafting, there will be a large amount of variety.

This is one of the reasons why I’ve been arguing loudly for implementing highlander (only one player can play a certain merc at any one time) and some form of drafting (the players pick their merc, or a captain picks and bans for the entire team, before the game starts and the players have to continue playing that merc for the rest of the round).

i can play every lol champion too and if im a good player i win.fact is there are every time the same champions banbned and mostly pick.i dont care about dota :slight_smile: because if i read the champion skills …
as some dota ex players said . in dota are only op champions left.you can stun one for 30 secs with,

if this will go dota style im out i want a shooter!!!

the number of chars isnt that that i currently thinking about ,its about if each char should only have a unique weapon. selfrevive medic could be way too good with other weapons.
