Testing your Dirtybomb in windows 10 with a Virtual Machine.

Here I’ll show you how to use a VM to test Dirtybomb inside a virtual machine.

  1. Install Oracle VirtualBox, it’s from the same people who made Java. https://www.virtualbox.org/

  2. Run VB, Mine already has serveral machines, but we’ll make another windows 10 machine.

  3. Download The windows 10 .iso here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/tl3l72pxscskpjm/Screenshot%202015-07-30%2011.22.40.png?dl=0

  4. Create a new VM.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/vfmobwxjl7nbvlo/Screenshot%202015-07-30%2011.26.02.png?dl=0

  5. Set your Ram to about 3000 or so.

  6. When it asks for a Virtual HDD, use the default or recommended options.

7.When you’re done, Right click the machine and click properties.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/09pjkdz4ongjxjj/Screenshot%202015-07-30%2011.31.00.png?dl=0

  1. Go through the Tabs and set the options to the best your computer can handle.

  2. Make sure you put the .iso you downloaded in step 3 here:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/09pjkdz4ongjxjj/Screenshot%202015-07-30%2011.31.00.png?dl=0

  3. Run the Machine and Follow the on screen instructions. If you get an error, you may need to enable Virtual machine support in your BIOS. If it says it’s going to erase the hard drive, it is, it’s going the erase the VIRTUAL HARD DRIVE you created in step 6, which has nothing on it.

Q&A

Q: Can I keep this copy of Windows forever?

A: Yes.

Q: Have you tried it with dirty bomb specifically?

A: No, but I’ve tried several other Unreal games and they work fine.

Q: What about Anti-Cheat?

A: I haven’t tested Xignpoop, but Punkbuster and VAC don’t care if you run in a VM.

This is a terribly inaccurate test. Running games in VMs has never been very successful in the past to begin with. Any problems experienced in a VM would not necessarily happen in a proper install.

I just can’t see the point of doing this.

Just to see if there are any clear issues with your machine. Of course not all issues in a VM mean issues on a “Real” instal, But this is just so you can mess with it before committing to the full windows 10 install.

Clearly unrelated to Dirty Bomb, what brings you into this forum with this?

I will post instructions on how to make a spicy banana-nut guacamole (before or after playing dirty bomb). Belongs in a cooking forum or here?

Games have a horrible performance in VMs to begin with, mostly related to the virtual graphic card drivers, that never allow you to get full GPU performance inside of a VM. If not for the limitation of CPU/RAM used that you would set up in VirtualBox.

Chances are you can’t see at all if there are any issues with your machine like that, because the game inside of a VM runs very shitty anyways.

I play most of my Valve games inside a VM with unbuntu and they run fine.

Basically your only chance to get acceptable GPU performance inside a VM is having IOMMU which Intel calls VT-D, AMD calls it AMD-Vi.

This essentially requires very specific hardware of which there is no mention in your guide.

Anything else than that will leave you with some extremely low quality standard vesa graphic adapter, or some equivalent with 128MB VRAM which can’t do jack shit for games.

And even if you have all that and manage to set up a VM to use it, the performance is still worse than in the full standalone booted OS of your choice.
