Im just getting into ET map making on linux, I have Q3Map2 2.5.7; GtkRadiant 1.3.11; i believe i need terrain editor, so could anyone suggest one for linux?
And any and all other tools one should have.

Gensurf will let you convert a heightmap into the necessary brushes. To actually make the heightmap I’d suggest a terraform (http://terraform.sf.net) + gimp combo. You can do neat things like erosion in terraform and export the heightmap to gimp where you can blur, airbrush, etc., and save as grayscale for gensurf. That has worked well for me so far. Texturing has to be done (somewhat) manually, but q3map2 can do most of the hard part of that for you. Look up the Terrain manual in the Radiant docs.
I doubt it. It’s not real hard, just export to gimp from terraform, and from gimp to greyscale tga (I think - I’ve found q3map2 doesn’t like gimps bmp files). Other tutorials give a good idea where to go once you have the greyscale.
another question, once you export from terraform to gimp to gtkgensurf, you make it as ground surface correct? and if so, i noticed its not closed space, do you box it up to make it closed?
hmm terraform seems a little difficult to use…doesnt help it doesnt have the tutuorial in it :\
It’s probably best to use gimp mostly, and import from gimp to terraform for things like erosion, etc. Flesh out the basic stuff with gimp, then use filters in terraform as necessary on that.
Also, I found the flowmap quite handy for deciding where to put rock and grass textures, something gimp wont help you with. If you’re interested, do a flowmap twice on your heightmap and the height of the result tells you how sloped the original is at that point.
FWIW, with a little practice, you can draw very nice heightmaps directly in a drawing program like photoshop or gimp.
