Terrain Problem #??

(Victorianetza) #1

This maybe is a n00B question but i have to ask it,

what is the easiest way to make caves in my map? i used this way and the terrain bugged(?)… um i made large boxes and placed them somewhere below the top of my terrain (grass, sand)… just made large cubes, without any caulk and stuff and pressed CSS subtract and the terrain became so different, abnormal… so… whats the proper way do make tunnels below ground, caves & stuff? :???:

Sock has some cool tuts on rock walls so maybe you could apply the concepts he puts forward in those:

http://www.planetquake.com/simland/pages/articles/rockdetail1_1.htm

Hope these are of some help

i know of these, but i have to make caves which are UNDER GROUND…

i need a way to “carve” the terrain ?! :blah:

tnx//

Well, I wouldn’t use CSG Subtract. You can clip off the excess caulk below the terrain surface, so you have room to make a cave with regular brushwork under it.

how to clip off? just to filter it, not to see it or something else? and if i somehow clip it off, is the terrain going to be, so to say “normal” or?

(Gringo Starr) #6

I’ve never had problems with that method. Use the clipper tool in Radiant. With the brush selected, push the clipper button, and left click the 2 points as if you were snapping a chaulk line. When you have the piece you want to keep highlighted in yellow, hit enter (you may have to reverse the order of the points you selected.) Just double-check the bottom surface after clipping, and make sure it’s still caulk.

hmm… never used it before, but hey, tnx  gonna try it in my future map

Yeah, CSG subtract and hollow can seriously F-up your brushwork, in addition to making inefficient brush cuts. However CSG merge is very handy

(Victorianetza) #9

what does it do?

(MadJack) #10

CSG Merge… as in merge brushes.

ohhh come on! nobody knows how to make a passage through the terrain of a map? I can think of 10 maps where there are such tunnels and caves!! come on!

Gringo Starr told you a method to do the underground passages. And tbh its the easy and efficient way to do it.
Just clip the terrain brushes where you want your passages to be and build them as socks tutorials instruct. Imo no other technique will result in valid brushwork.
If I remember right, ratty redemption explained a little different, but similar method as sock.

EDIT: Sorry, it wasn’t ratty, but GO-gerbil.Rockwall Tutorial See page 2.

Victo, how about a little searching? Use google or whatever, I’m sure you’ll get a ton of hits.
