Terrain making

(ghostcarrot) #1

I had this idea for a map for such a long time and i still cant make it… since i have lost all hope of making terrain, i suck at it and since the idea is a outdoor map i screwed. Ive tried making it with easygen (since i can add textures in there, i have no clue how to do it in GTK even after reading shitloads of tutorials about it.) but it looks crap as always. so my question is, is there anyone who knows a easy way to make terrain with the textures added on it so i don’t need to worry about blending or is willing to help me make to terrain?
The map plays in the ardennes so i need elevation and stuff :frowning:

easygen is just what you want/need it does all the blending etc if you add the shaders it creates to your shaderlist.txt / pk3 file

It’s realy easy to make your own terrain by hand, useless to make it with programs.

-Making it by hand you get much more variaty of what you are doing and have more control over it.
So here is a small tutorial i wrote just now.

1)Open GTK and your map.

Select grid size 9 (grid 256) and make one box on your map, like this.

Adjut the height of the box till you are pleased (leave some space incase you want to move the terrain down)

2)Now select the clipper tool (hotkey X) and clip it like this, so you get a 90 Degreed triangle at both sides.

After you have set the two clip points, press enter and you get one triangle.
Now select that triangle and duplicate it and rotate the just now duplicated triangle against the other triangle so you get 2 triangles. Something like this.

As you can see there are now 2 triangles.

3)Now the fun part.
select one of the triangles and press V (Vertices). Now you should see green dots at the end of the triangle. Select one of the dots and press W (Translate tool)

(To exit Translate tool press Esc or W again)

As you can see you will see 3 arrows, obviously you control the movement with it. Now move the Vertices up using the blue arrow. (Also when starting to move the vertices i suggsest to use grid 6 to move them)

When moving you should get something like this.

As you can see one side of the triangle has moved up. Now do the same to the rest of the vertices, move them up and down as needed, Do not move them left to right as it will get confusing and can cause you lots of headache if not made properly.

Here is a example of the result. It toke me about 4minutes to make this, but it should show you that making terrain by hand is much more superiour way and has more variaty.

PS! When making big maps, it will get time consuming work, but trust me the result is worth it.

Also i am using 1.5 version of GTK dont know if it’s the same way in 1.4 version of GTK

Hope it helped

ye it works the same in 1.4 , though the problem he must face then is terrain blending etc =) But I agree, it is worth the time + work. I am doing it by hand aswell.

Well terrain blending is relatively easy once you get the hang of it.

Also there is a great tutorial from seven_dc around here http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7489&highlight=terrain+blending+tutorial
Probably one of the best and easiest explained one around here.

Glad you agree

hey, thanks  this helped me a lot

IIRC, pressing shift+enter with the clipper tool cuts the brush and keeps both sides.
