Terrain, ground surface tris.

Ive been working on a map with some large outdoor terrain parts, ive been making the terrina myself instead of using the plugin, but mines the same, triangles caulked etc, but my tris are 1/4 the size of the default ground surface.

Is this going to kill the map later? Ive got about 1/3 of my terrain layed out (alot) and i see no performance probs atm with no lights and using the bsp -meta build, but it looks alot better.

Ive been planning on using the larger tris for the outer terrain, but want some better quality detail in the high traffic areas. There are a few areas where i need to use the small tris as well. Not real time consuming to change but i like this way better, is it going to kill me though later on?

That all depends on the layout actually. If you are going to add tons of other things over the terrain later on that maybe a problem. But it all comes down to FPS in the end. So make sure you build your map they way that players cant see all at once.

The more polys that can be seen the worse FPS u will get. But u can have alot of polys seen before it drops FPS.

My latest terrain for my ongoing project has over 9000 brushes in only the terrain. So that makes up for about 27000 polys if all is drawn at once. But as i made some winding paths and made sure it all cannot be seen from everywhere i get over 120 FPS on all places using only an old GF2 PRO 64 card.
