Teamwork Tips

(ChinChill) #1

We all know the importance of teamwork but in the rush of the game, it can be easy to lose focus of that and concentrate on your own score instead. So I just thought we could all post some tips and tricks that add up when working together and fighting dirty.

  1. Check what other Mercs your team has
It’s always good to know what your team is packing. If you have three Auras, you probably don’t need another. See what you’re lacking and what you need. Depending on the map and your objectives you might lean towards certain Mercs - i.e. Kira is a lot more effective on Chapel than she is on Underground, and in Chapel she’s most powerful shutting down the EV. Check it throughout the match too, given how often people switch classes about. There’s no ‘you must absolutely have this’ team set-up, though I heavily recommend always having one Medic* on the team.

2) Look out for each other
When you see your teammates on the floor, in the middle of the battlefield, you will be best leaving them to their fate (unless you’re a medic). But if they’re downed in a safe area and there’s no nearby threats, helping them up provides not only XP for you, but it reduces the time they’d spend running back into combat. This is especially important if it’s a medic on the floor. If you have to pick between a medic and anyone else, get the medic up first - their defib can get anyone else up in no time.

And as a little add-on, neutralising the enemies bombs and mines and sensors isn’t just about XP. It also means they’re not gonna catch your team with those explosives.

3) Aim for them
Not with your guns. With your deployables! Throwing a medkit or ammo directly into an ally actually boosts how much they benefit from it and gives you extra XP. So it not only benefits them but you too for a direct hit. Make sure you keep dishing them out too, especially if you’re carrying ammo. Medics can see a health meter but there’s no such clue for ammo. Just assume everyone is firing their gun a lot because they should be.

In terms of ammo stations and health stations, try to position them where they benefit everyone, not just you. Around corners and slightly hidden is best, otherwise the enemy will take it out! Which leads onto;

4) Communication is golden
Let’s face it, forewarning about a turret, a group of enemies or someone manning a minigun can be a lifesaver. Even if it was too late for you, warning your team about the sensor around the corner means someone can take it with due caution. It’s also good to inform your team where you’ve dropped off your health/ammo station, so they know where they can recover and refuel.

I typically type it out, which can admittedly take time, but there’s other methods too. Voice chat is a thing but for the shy, there’s also voice commands. Check your settings to see what key these options are binded to can change them to your liking. And remember, be somewhat polite! There’s no need to be an arse to the people you’re playing with.

5) Cover each other
If someone is repairing the EV, cover them. If someone is reviving someone, cover them. If someone is completing an objective, cover their arse. It’s honestly one of the most helpful things you can do in this game. Nothing stacks to give a speed bonus; the only speed bonus for completing tasks goes to the Engineer Mercs**. Rather than sit around twiddling you thumbs, be on the lookout for incoming enemies as your teammate will be a hot target without a means of defending themselves.

That’s all I can currently think of. Feel free to disagree and/or add your own teamwork tips!

*Medics are Aura (given to everyone), Sawbonez, Sparks and Phoenix (not yet released)
**Engineer Mercs are Proxy, Bushwacker, Fletcher and Turtle (not yet released)

Brilliant guide! Please write up more of the same, they are extremely helpful to all players.

One thing I’d like to stress also, is that if using voice chat, please be polite! More often than not I have heard people completely bagging out some medics because they didn’t revive them. Not all players know how to play the game, nor play medic, and even if they do they could be trying to clear the area. It’s better for a medic to fight the enemy and kill them, then revive you, because it means 2 live players. If the medic ignores enemies and goes beeline to a wounded body, they will almost always get taken out by the same player that killed the wounded player. Instead you have 2 dead players.

Voice chat is pretty bad quality anyway, and is distracting. I think you should only use voice chat if the built in voice commands don’t cover it. E.g. if you need medic, ammo etc. just press V and use the voice command menu for callouts. Only use voice if what you want to say is not there, or if it’s critical to your team winning the match.

Also remember this is a free to play game, with all sorts of people on. Don’t assume everyone is hell bent on winning the match, not everyone is playing competitively. Many times I get new mercs or new loadouts and go around experimenting with abilities, and then get absolutely hammered with insults because of it. If you want to play competitively and talk to your team etc, play the competitive mode, not the normal quick match.

If you are like me and can’t stand the attitude of some players using voice chat, just mute them. Go to the scoreboard, right click the mouse to bring up the cursor and right-click on the players and select ‘Toggle Mute’. Don’t let muppets ruin a good game for you.

Some other tips:
Learn the maps well. There are only a few of them at this stage, so do your best to memorise where the MG turrets are, ammo crates are, objectives/C4 spots are. Know what is primary objective and secondary objective.

If you like the game, support it and buy the mercs, ideally get them via the bundles. Splash Damage and Nexon can’t make games like this unless we support them.
