Switch back to weapons with Q

(artfulSedan) #1

So i’ve been playing nader recently and i really like her. There is one thing that bugs me though. That i have to change to my primary weapon via mousewheel or number keys. In the heat of the battle i often caught me trying to switch back with Q because my brain thinks: press q to pull out your special ability weapon and press Q to holster it and get out your previous weapon.
It kinda takes out the flow of weapon switching when you have multiple ways to switch between ‘normal weapons’. You only really notice that when your special abilty is actually a weapon that you carry around and aim and not just press a button and done like most of them.

My ideas:

Q puts back in the launcher and equips the previous weapon
OR
the grenade launcher is an actual weapon and lsited under a numeric key.

click on 4 do switch to grenade launcher and 1 to primary weapon its simple

Yeah not sure what the problem is. You can bind it to whatever button you want?

(artfulSedan) #4

no because it would change the layout for every abilty on Q and don’t just play nader

Or you could just train your muscle memory to do it right.

okay okay i got it o-o it was jsut an idea nvm.

I wouldn’t want it to work like that but I wouldn’t mind at least a toggle added in where if you press Q you fire your nade and the launcher stays out and press Q again and it goes back to your main weapon. As long as that’s not default then I’d be cool with it.

Otherwise just try to use the number keys or w/e keys you want to switch weapons. I use Q to use specials quickly but I have A bound to my primary weapons (I use ESDF to move), mouse key bound to melee since I use it for movement a ton and then use the number keys for things like ammo/secondary.

I would love that. And think having a toggle in options to change such behaviour would be fine for everybody.

I play with a lefthanded keyboard layout and have my movement keys on the numpad and cursor keys (don’t argue with me on this one I play that way for decades).
Problem is the weapon keys are on the other side.
So I’m used to change weapons with the mousewheel. Thing is switching this way from the Nadelauncher means that the crotzni is the first thing that you pull out. Sounds fine under most circumstances but if that gun is empty and you pull an empty gun out in a firefight you loose ^^ . So if Q would holster the nadelauncher and give you your previous weapon that would be nice.

Funny, I also have my knife on the mouse thumb button for the same reason.

My other weapon keys are bound like this:

E for primary
F for secondary
C for item 1 (grenade launcher, grenades, airstrike marker, etc)
CapsLock for item 2 (that is similar to your A key, I remapped CapsLock to another key so I wouldn’t ALWAYS SHOUT BY ACCIDENT)

I used to use mouse wheel as well (up for primary, down for secondary) but decided to give that up to have less finger movements on the mouse and a more stable grip.

My ability quick keys are on Q and Z, but I’ve found that generally there is just no reason to use them. Switching to the items is just as effective and almost always more comfortable for me (I also don’t use quick knife and have USE (standard F) on my middle mouse button instead).

I would encourage everybody to play around with the bindings and find what works best for you. The defaults are always designed to be suitable for the lowest common denominator, which means that they are far from ideal.

You will find that switching weapons with the number buttons is much more safe and precise. Especially with mercs that give you a larger variety of weapons to choose from you are much more likely to get confused when using a mouse wheel or if you are dependent on always switching to the last weapon.

A good example for that is fletcher. You can’t just switch around randomly to play him fast and efficient. But if you got used to play with numbers he is a lot better to play.

The pyro from TF2 makes an even better explanation. You had to be able to execute combos vety fast and were bound to switch between weapons fast anf precise. In addition i always used the powerjack which pretty much had the same effect as pulling out a melee in Dirty Bomb. Now that i am used to it from the previous game, i have never had the problems you had.

I dont understand people that are arguing about preferences I saw some strange shit on lans and it wasnt because they were bad but because they felt like it would be better for them. This is why there are such things as “Control Settings” telling him that it is dumb is nowhere near an answer for him!

Boy listen in. I quickly checked the control tab and i found a bind called “Toggle Prim/Sec” which basically gives u the primary weapon OR if u press it again the secondary. that would give u the chance to get from your special skill to A weapon.

@Gi.Am I would recommend you putting the whole set to the keys so “Kp_pos1” would be Q and E is “kp_pageup” dunno if the keys are named like that but they are labeld thuswise.
you could try to use Toggle prim/sec aswell, just play around if this answer isnt suiting you give me a hint and i may start to play around with binding in UE to get you what you want.

happy fragging y’all
