super short feedback after first round in a long while

i can’t remember when was the last time i played the game. it was already very solid back then but it lacked some polish, especially with the feel of some of the guns and the game population was really small.

i don’t know how the game is populated right now but matchmaking was able to put me in a game pretty much instantly.

the match itself was fun! i didn’t feel overwhelmed by other players that actually have skill. i felt like i was contributing to the match. i used used the dude with the grenades and the machine gun and was able to get some kills with the revolver which i’m usually very bad at. it felt really powerful. the machine gun was pretty powerful, too. so, the feel of the guns is almost perfect. they feel like they have a punch to them. although, i wasn’t always able to tell when to use ironsights. most of the time i fired from the hip which is intentional i guess.

the game is very fast. i come from games like quake and wolf:et is one of my all time favorite shooters but i’m getting old, you know. it probably takes a while to get used to the speed. again, i didn’t feel overwhelmed. i just haven’t played shooters for a while now. but considering this, my performance was pretty ok. i even disarmed the dynamite once and led my team to victory.

now to the objectives. bare in mind that this was my first match. i played this map before but only for a little bit. i don’t know the map and i only know one objective. however, i was not able to use the interface to find objectives. i found one of the side objectives by running through the map. long story short, the game was too hectic for me to look at the interface and figure out where to find objectives. maybe some more clear notifications where to find side objectives would be nice.

i also found out that mines are pretty mean. with practice you probably get used to where mines will be placed. i didn’t see the mines (which is intended of course) at all and actually got killed by one. i don’t know how much damage they actually do but imho, they should not 1 shot kill you. 90% hp, fine but not instant death. that’s frustrating.

another thing that might need some improvements is the menu interface. for example, i didn’t know i could drag&drop the mercs to my match loadout. i saw this in a youtube video. i only have a couple mercs available and have no clue where to unlock more. i also got a notification about an unlocked item but i wasn’t able to find this either. so, interface should be a bit more user friendly.

there’s also one bug. i have a joystick connected to my pc. when you’re ingame, your character constantly turns to the side until you unplug the joystick.

that’s about everything i can think of after my first round. i am very excited for the game. my experience was very positive and i was reminded to the good old wolf:et times. it’s fast paced, it’s fluid, it promotes team play, even among randoms and it’s a lot of fun. there’s a slight learning curve, because you’re not familiar with all the different mercs but that’s actually a good thing. the game felt challenging but not super hard. it probably won’t be for everyone, because it’s very fast paced but fans of the good old day shooters may find a new home with dirty bomb.

all you need to do now is polish more, squish some bugs, make the ui a bit more user friendly and obviously always try to balance the game as good as possible. and for the future of course new maps and new mercs. i really, really like how the mercs are implemented. every merc is it’s own character which gives the game a lot more charm. so, i hope to see more of them in the future.

that’s it about my short feedback from a new player’s perspective. now i would like to as a few questions:

back when brink was developed, i remember a long discussion about adding team deatchmatch to brink. i actually can’t remember what my stance was but do you have plans to add maps that are a bit more simple? like, for team deathmatch or domination style gameplay?

do you have a release date and how do you plan to expand the beta?

thanks for reading. you’ve done a great job with dirty bomb! keep it up. if you continue this route, i think you will make a lot of people very happy. i’m excited!

Thanks for the feedback kilL_888, it’s very much appreciated! You’ve certainly hit on some points that need improvement (and we’re actively working on :)).

As for Deathmatch…that’s not really a high priority for us at the moment, we do tend to prefer objective based game modes. With that said, it’s entirely possible that we’ll expand upon the game’s current game modes & maybe even introduce one that’s a little more straightforward for players who aren’t familiar with SW type gameplay.

We haven’t announced a release date yet, no. We haven’t even reached open beta :P.

Steam says June 2015?

thanks for the reply. about the different game modes. i actually talked to one of the dudes that i gave my spare keys to. one thing he criticized was the lack of game modes. i know splash damage’s games for a long time now and i know that objective style gameplay is their strength and no other developer does it as good as they do but other people have their expectations. they do expect more than just one game mode (even though this mode combines several game modes). but people do not know this. i think you should put some efforts in creating more simple game modes, just to have some more variety. it just sounds better on paper and it actually gives players more options.

another thing he criticized was the waiting time before and after the match.
