suggestion for better ranked matchmaking

just show a counter of how many servers are being checked.

in the bottom of the searching for server screen when looking for a match, just list how many possible servers there are available or in progress in your skill bracket, as well as how many people currently searching

it of course wont make more matches, but it would make people see “Oh, theres only two servers i even could join and theyre in progress. ill go pub around a bit then come back later”

it might make cobalts feel a little better about it, not much just a little instead of waiting unable to join a game for two+ hours because “If i leave now i might miss my chance as i have no idea how close or far i am to a server”

Yes. Great suggestion.

Sometimes I wish MM wasn’t a thing in DB
so all of the casuals would shut the crap up and play a FPS as they were originally designed.

how does playing a game in matchmaking compared to server browser relate to original design

why does it matter how you get into the server instead of gameplay

Once upon a time in the realm of FPS’s
there were many competitive leagues
Places where there were no helping hands
You either sucked or you didn’t suck
But then the hurt ego came along
And wanted to play same tier players
because that would surely get them better competitively
they thought
The end

I know if I stuck to playing with same tier players starting out, I would still suck. I’ve played in leagues in other games and you just have to keep on moving up if the competitive aspect interests you more. Right now I would love to play matches that I’d lose in, they’re the most exciting games to have.

And you haven’t talked about it. But the queue times have been atrocious these last few days. I’ve queued for a total of 6-8 hours and played about that number of matches. It’s punishing to be at a higher rank because you’re then placed into a small category of players that rarely face each other off (For example, my team and I matched the avg team rank of lightning’s team the other day and for some awful god reason we were not getting paired. As I’m watching his stream and seeing almost identical ranks. We’re in the same region, with the same three maps, and still MM did not want to pair us). I rarely play EO’s because they are a rarity to find does that mean they shouldn’t find any games and give people the opportunity to rank up quicker and take their rank from them?

oh you mean matchmaking as in looking for matches with the same skill brackets instead of having different tiers

i thought you meant it was you waited in a queue instead of joining an already in progress server in a browser

His point, while harsh and not exactly diplomatic, was that most people just played on pub servers in the past. Anybody who wanted to get into competition either found a team or formed a team and joined one of the many league alternatives. Now, due to games like LoL and others making random matchmaking a feature a lot of people mistake “competition” aka “comp” as joining one of those queues and then expecting to face off against similar skilled opponents without any effort of having to find a team or league or practice or scrim. It’s a lazy solution to making people feel like they are in a real competition and progressing without having to work for it. Which breeds a lot of entitlement issues and a lot of issues with perceived “balance”. And you also have very little chance of facing better players who, even through a loss, you can learn from due to seeing better strats, positions or simply knowing who they are and looking up videos of them playing.

Personally, I think the MM system is part of why leagues in DB can’t be sustained. Splash Damage should have went all in with the MM system and made a solo queue unranked, solo queue ranked and then team (3+ people) unranked and ranked while also including a proper league/tournament system (similar to how LoL does it) and not have the option for open pub servers (especially since they aren’t community controlled). They could have made everything 5v5 and balance would have been much simpler.

The other option was to simply make DB a pub only game and rent servers out and let leagues thrive similar to how other games do it. Currently DB works a lot like CS:GO but there is no option to throw up your own server/rent servers (which kills leagues) and it offers ranked MM which also kills leagues. What works in a game that has millions upon millions playing every week does not work in a game that has, at most, 250,000 playing during new merc release weeks and 180,000 normally.
