While in the short time of having Brink I have had an even mix of good and bad, overall I still quite enjoy the game. I was disappointed after getting entirely engrossed in the storyline before release to read that the campaign is lack-luster, but hey…I can get into just about anything.
I’m a PS3 user, so I’m playing solely offline at the moment, which I felt was a great idea as being stuck with singleplayer will make me learn to enjoy it more. However, there is one stupendous overlook that has killed the game for me when I’m only on my second mission! I flicked on the private game, so I could have a quick practise of the general feel of the game after not beating the time limit on Security’s second mission. Like a lot of gamers, I don’t have endless pits of my life to reserve for videogames, so I have to make do with a short gamespan each day. So I’ve been on the phone, flicking through to private game offline to have a quick feel of the controls with less enemies (I’d originally thought it would be an empty map). As I get off the phone, I look up to see the words “Hangar 18”. Having not seen any option to change map so far I shrug it off and assume from there I can have an intense freeplay session. Five seconds into the opening I look up and hear the words “This is top secret. There is still an outside world.” Sure enough I just dropped what I was doing and facepalmed.
The fact that (from what I can see) you can access any missions from singleplayer without even having to beat the lead-up is confusing, though I may have misunderstood that. To be put simply, there interface should be far more user-friendly so that an incident where a randomly loaded map doesn’t happen to have spoilers within the first five seconds! Perhaps not being able to access a map you’ve unplayed without a warning beforehand.
Either way, I’m very disappointed that having to play alone, I’ve just lost a pivotal part of the story (albeit a predictable one) to such an oversight. Anyone else have the misfortune of this occuring?
