Stop saying these things

(Machine for to kill) #21

point the first

in most occasions, time is not of the essence (such as writing in this forum) so there is no need to use acronyms or abreviations. Their use in these situations is very stupid because whatever little time you saved typing, has to be spent by the reader in trying to decipher your acronym. Sure the things mentioned above are common and we all know what they mean, but I’ve seen people use all kind of weird expressions in an attempt to look cool, and I honestly could not understand what they meant. In the end this works negatively for you because people don’t understand what you’re trying to say. Not to mention the fact that it makes you look very immature, and overall as a person who should not be taken seriously (I wonder how many people will quote this last part).

point the second
I think I achieved my goal because from now on everytime you use those expression you will think of this thread, and you will get an ugly feeling, and you won’t feel as good about your little stupid phrases.

lol, i use this a lot, but seriously… when im all lined up to panzer someone and from out of nowhere i get panzered, im seriously laughing out loud… i may look like a gibbering idiot in my chair laughing, but its funny.

omg… never use that… takes a lot to make me think of god from something i saw in the game… it has to be a super spectacular l337 move.

rofl… i dont think i laughed enough to drop me on the floor and roll… maybe when i was 2 years old…

but lol… yes… i use that a lot… cause i do laugh when i get gibbed good… and i want the person who gibbed me to know i enjoyed it a lot… and watch out… cause it may be my turn next to gib back…
:bump:

that edit/repost bug… sorry to spam twice

Aha! I suspect that is the root of the problem. You don’t understand the dialect, to rather than learn it, you intend to get everyone to stop using it, by calling them ‘faggots’.

For better or worse, online slang is here to stay.

think I achieved my goal because from now on everytime you use those expression you will think of this thread, and you will get an ugly feeling, and you won’t feel as good about your little stupid phrases.

ROFLMAO! No, I may think of you and have a good larf tho. Especially when you complain about ‘stupid phrases’ while in the same post calling people (whose sexual orientation you know nothing of) faggots.

So STFU already.
:moo:  :moo:

Yep. Nail, head, hit. People that use them don’t (that means ‘do not’) have to spend time working out what they mean, it’s (that means ‘it is’) second nature. I think it’s safe to say you’re (‘you are’) not a regular user of IRC or Usenet (or the Web in fact), where such language is common. Not knowing what something means or spending the time to write out everything the long way makes you look like a newbie. I know people on Usenet that have been online for 20-30 years, are stupidly intelligent in very high paid jobs, and regularly use phrases such as YMMV (look it up). Read any basic FAQ (look it up) or guide to Usenet or IRC, and you’ll be advised to learn the language before attempting to converse with the regulars.

And yes, calling people faggots is worse than using the language you complain about, and tells us a lot more about you.

The only points you made that I’d agree with is using ‘intentional typos’ and zeros instead of O’s. But I just choose not to use them, it doesn’t upset me if somebody else uses them. It’s like a label that it’s a younger user, just live with it and don’t use them if you want to appear more sophisticated (which obviously isn’t your intention if you start a thread like this),

BTW (look it up), it’s ridiculous to complain about people not spending the time to type properly, because just as words such as “teh” and “pwned” originated from typos, you yourself invented a new one in “733t” - which to my knowledge didn’t even exist (unless you meant “1337” and just couldn’t be bothered to type it correctly).

I hope you’ve never written a letter with PS at the end… OH NOES J00 SI TEH LAMER N0W!!!1.

Nope, the opposite, next time I use them I’ll hope that you’re listening and that I’m annoying you even more

(Machine for to kill) #26

hahahahah regulars…what a joke.

you all think you’re starting some kind of new nerd slang and you’re not. I’ve met people whos computer knowledge I truly admired and I have never seen them ever use anything but proper english. It is a sign of intelligence.

and for the record…just like your slang uses these terms, my slang use the terms faggot and ball sucker. See all the comments I got in reply to that.

This thread is going nowhere. You want to talk like a bunch of idiots go right ahead.

(ziege) #27

It’s definitely a joke if you think people don’t regularly use IRC & Usenet. They do. That would make them regulars, no?

Correct, it’s not new, people have been using some of these words since before web forums or online gaming existed, and decades before you ever used the Internet by the looks of things. Maybe when you’ve been using computers for a few more years you’ll get sick of typing the same thing over & over again, and realise just why people use things like IMO, YMMV, AAMOF, AFAIK, ATM, BION, BTW, FWIW, IIRC, LOL, MYOB, etc etc (you know what ‘etc’ means right?)

I’ve met people whos computer knowledge I truly admired and I have never seen them ever use anything but proper english. It is a sign of intelligence.

Like I said, you’ve never been on Usenet have you? (It would suprise me if you even knew what it was.) It’s not new, it’s been around long before the web, and it’s not suddenly going to go away because you’ve showed up and can’t understand it.

Most “l33t” functions as any other abbreviation or shorthand. Quicker to write may be slower to read, but when you’re ingame (or arguing) are you more bothered about the time it takes for your writing or their reading? Same applies for IRC and forums etc., though there the laziness factor is greater. People who contribute to many forums, or simply have lots of other stuff to do, rarely are that bothered about precise grammar – both writing and reading it – as long as the point is understood without too much effort decyphering it.

Bear in mind that on IRC, and to a lesser extent instant messengers, it is more like a conversation and hence timeliness of reply is important. It takes longer to type than it does to orate a reply, and whereas in a conversation they start to hear the reply as soon as you start to give it, on IRC they do not start to have the response until you have completed it. To retain the natural flow of conversation corners have to be cut somewhere, and it just persists elsewhere.

There is also the insider joke (which is where the 0/o tends to come in) - rediculous grammar is often intended in order to indicate sarcasm or a widely known perception within teh intarweb culture. “pr0 gamer” quickly and easily indicates the writer is less than completely serious about the topic of professional computergame players, “teh intarweb” is synonomous with the perceived AOL customer, “innernet” suggests reference towards a cynical view of an American…

True a skilled writer would not need to indicate the tone so plainly, but more often than not people post to communicate something during leisure time, rather than to create an impression of their intelligence or character upon someone they will never knowingly meet in that other dimension - “IRL”. There is some reflection to be found mainstream with txt msgs.

I find grammar tends to be more of an indicator of personality rather than intelligence. TBH i consider it far more curiosu when someone makes a point which is punctuated with PERIOD. Nobody feels the need to go around finishing with EXCLAMATION MARK!

I wonder where you expected this thread to go? When you created this, did you expect that everybody would agree with you, perhaps maybe you could make a few close friends and invite them over for a party? Anything?

Threads like this never go anywhere.

I never used to use any of these acronyms until I started online gaming, and the reason I do is just because it’s fun, simple as that. It has nothing to do with my intelligence (or as you explain it, ‘lack’ of intelligence). I just think it’s funny and I think it’s funnier that it gets you all mad.

BTW, I’ll never be in any instance where I’m using my ub3r l33t n3w sl4ng wh3n 1’m pwn1ng s0m3 n00b 4nd th1nk tw1c3 du3 t0 th15 thr34d.

I’ll just use it a ridiculous amount more… and what’s going to happen? People aren’t going to like me? They won’t respect me? They’ll think I’m immature? :bored: :frowning: Aww that makes me so sad.

Of course, what’s it matter if you respect, like or think I’m immature when you’re calling for a medic anyways?

“Stop saying these things”?

and then you use “faggot” as a term of abuse?

sigh.

Please stop playing our game. Or grow up. I’m not bothered which.

For the record SD is kinda grumpy about racist, sexist, homophobic or any other kind of mouth-breathing knuckle-dragging abuse on the forums, on our server, or in real life. We’re funny that way.

:moo:

(ToeD) #35

hehe ban his ip in the next update bongoboy :open_mouth:

(Kerunch) #36

One question why is Faggot being used as a nasty insult to gay people?
When i was younger this was a kind of meatball in gravey"Brains Faggots" I think. Back to the thread…
I like to use LOL as it means I laughed, its easier to write that than"oh that was really funny gosh I laughed quite heartly"And if you check most of machines posts and then read the last big answer I think you will see that his older sister wrote it for him just my thoughts…

(ziege) #37

Yeh, and those crazy Americans have made it so we can’t call cigarettes by the usual name anymore. I’ve had to get out of calling them ‘fags’ and started calling them ‘cigs’ or ‘ciggies’ now when I’m online, which sounds ridiculous. The phrase ‘I need a fag’ just doesn’t sound as harmless as before.

(Kerunch) #38

LOL ! Dam those queer american people.Whoops another word bites the dust.

(SylverDragon) #39

Hey, just because I am out of shape from playing this game too much (mouth-breathing), and I have long arms (knuckle dragging), is no reason to insult me.

Ok, joking aside. I have to agree with the general sentiment on this thread: Machine for To Kill, WTF? Ok, I’ll grant that the use of acronyms online is probably not helping anyone get used to the proper form of English (nor does living in the US, for that matter), but its a rather pointless gesture to try and stop it, and complaining about it, is just silly. First off, it is faster to type, and for those that are used to it, it is faster to read. Remember, the whole point of language is to communicate ideas, if the intended audience understands the idea being related, then the language, whatever language is used, has accomplished its goal. Its (the proper form of it is, for the person who was making points about contractions earlier, it’s is the possesive form of it) much like the word through; it is now commonly being abbreviated to “thru”. Is this incorrect? Technically, yes, but does it accomplish the point of the word? Largely, it does. Most people will recognize the word “thru” as having the same meaning as the word “through”; besides which, have you ever tried to pronounce all of the letters in the second form?
Abbreviations in online communication are simply a time saving feature, much like contractions (as was mentioned earlier). Heck, as far back as I can recall being online (mid 90’s), I have seen, and used them. And this was on AOL (forgive me, they had Never Winter Nights, and I didn’t know any better). So, my whole point: like the slang of the day, get used to it. Complaining about it doesn’t make you look more educated, it just shows your lack of understanding of the purpose of language.
Ok, I’m done rambling now…
