Still uncertain whether or not to buy, and why.

I am a paranoid, paranoid person. I am afraid of being burned when I purchase games, and so I find myself trying to weigh things out to see if it’s worth it. I’m used to companies trying to take advantage of me, and Bethesda’s media blackout in regards to the game has been the primary source of my immense frustration.

My difficulties:

  1. I already have TF2. I play TF2 heavily. I like TF2. I have friends in TF2. I think TF2 is one of the most perfect team multiplayer games in existence. TF2 is currently in a major update cycle and is about to get pumped full of new weapons. Forced to choose, hats will win.

  2. Brink’s class system scares me. I played the QWET demo. I played the QWET demo a lot. Never bought it due to lackluster ingame communication, but I played the demo. The class objectives worry me, especially when it’s only 8v8. The class specialization scares me, as that puts even more weight on having that class. If you play that class and you’re not specced into it, I see the potential for a lot of ingame harassment over it. Not good juju.

  3. The parkour scares me. I’m all for ease of movement in an FPS game. I loved how Dystopia had ledge-hanging and one-handed shooting while doing that and all of that good stuff. But the idea of jumping through hoops makes me rather uneasy. Is this a team shooter or a parkour deathmatch game?

  4. In the grim darkness of the future, there is only DLC. I am worried about the future of the game should I purchase it. Will there be updates? Will it be well-supported? Will it be abandoned? Will there be DLC? Will it be free or paid? What’s the expected ratio of that? Will there be cake? Will Bethesda redeem themselves, or once more abuse their customers with a sub-par scheme to maximize profits by playing the rubes for every dime?

I am manic right now. Truly and utterly a jibbering, jabbering mess over this. I really dislike paying for new games these days because I always end up going through this.

The following is in no way directed at Splash Damage, save for if they are responsible:
IF THERE IS ONE REASON I DON’T BUY BRINK, IT’S BECAUSE OF BETHESDA’S POLICY TOWARD REVIEWERS. IF YOU’RE NOT GOING TO ALLOW YOUR CUSTOMERS TO BE INFORMED, GO HUMP A LANDMINE.:armadillochase:

If these are your only concerns I think we’re doing alright

It’s $40. SD has a proven track record. The class objective system has worked over and over. Worst case you’ll get more gameplay out of it than most single player games and then go back to TF2. Not all games are for everyone but SD puts out quality games so that’s one thing not to worry about.

I love this post for so many reasons. +1 to you my good, paranoid sir.

I too have been burned by many games and I too LOVE TF2 and play it regularly.

I bought the game tonight just thinking the gaming gods will throw me a bone. I trust the people behind the game and I really like the general concepts Brink brings to the table.

My favorite kind of video game is the team based FPS so Brink is right up my alley. I haven’t bought a game in a little while (minus epic steam sales) so this is the first time I have plopped down a wallet full on a new game in months.

Call it faith, call it intuition … call it experience. I have a good feeling about Brink.

If TF2, Borderlands, Mirrors Edge, and COD had a baby … I think they’d name it Brink.

Some people can feel rain coming in their bones, I can feel a good online MP  I hope I’m right and I think I am.

As the great Sir Charles once said “I may be wrong but I doubt it!”

lol =p

I have heard that Bethesda has the creative and developmental oversight. That scares me. Bethesda has never put out a quality game in their history.

Note: I’m not saying their games aren’t fun. I’m saying “Fan patches that fix 6,000 issues that were in the game from day 1”

Buy it /thread

Put it this way, word has it that one of the reasons SD moved away from Actifail was so they could have more creative control
It’s their flipping IP!
If SD are saying it’s their best release to date, I think their track record would lead me to believe that statement

Since the release of Wolfenstein Enemy Territory that I awaited for Brink, finally it is here! soon . . .

Viva la Revolution! Viva la Independencia! Viva la libertade

SD is a great dev team, but where are you getting the $40 price tag from?

(SockDog) #11

http://Direct2Drive.com with SIZZLE code (25% off) = $38

I never really got into Enemy Territory.

It doesn’t hurt to wait a bit to see how others like it. Brink won’t be going anywhere.

Do you repeatedly wash your hands and door knobs?

(Grimhound) #15

Not so much, no. Used to have a big issue with locks. Ever sped backwards up a hill at 30mph because you’re unsure if you locked a door or turned a lightswitch off?

(Mephster) #16

I like Brink because it hs a real story unlike TF2. We’re not aimlessly shooting one another for no reason in Brink. In Brink there is a method to our madness.

1. As far as TF2.

If you really enjoy playing TF2 and you don’t really need a new game to play, I wouldn’t purchase a new game. Personally I only buy something new when what I have doesn’t work anymore. TF2 doesn’t work for me anymore because I don’t like all the manconomy stuff, I like having a set number of items that I know what their functions generally are. I know all the items are balanced and stuff, but I still think it’s a bit much.

I do like TF2 competitive play a lot, but I just don’t want to put in the time to get good enough at it to make competitive play a viable time sink for my free time.

2. Classes

In Brink, yes for certain parts of the mission certain classes are simply required to advance. All classes are always useful, some are required though. In Brink if no one on your team is fulfilling the role you can switch to it, of course. However as you get deeper into the specializations for each class you end up with a sub-par ability class you are just playing because no one else will.

If you’re worried about that, spec your character so that you pretty much are decent at everything. Personally I’m not worried about it, I can switch to assault quickly to plant the bomb, make sure it goes off, and switch back to my “main”.

3. The parkour.

Think of this simply as a more elaborate “double jump” from the scout. It lets you navigate the map more quickly and take small shortcuts that the devs have put in the map for your class to utilize. It is not really all that revolutionary when you think of it that way.

4. Support

Splash Damage has a great track record for their PC game support and their drive to make the game the best it can be even after release. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. However, I can’t speak to what their DLC or patches will look like as I don’t work for them.

Hope I helped

You could always wait and see how itll do. You likely know some people from TF2 who will be getting it.

You dont NEED to buy a game on day one.

Brink has the weakest story of any AAA FPS to come out in the last two years, and TF2 has a constant and ongoing storyline that has evolved over the past 3.5 years with new content added into it constantly.

If it had a singleplayer story worth a damn, I’d have bought Brink without much of an issue. I like story in shooters. Brink cut corners to the point where it should’ve been $20, not $50.
