Steam screenshots not working.

(DarkMatterMatt) #1

About 2 months ago, I stopped being able to screenshot in DB. Normally, I would switch to a different application and screenshot a different way. Unfortunately, none of them work
-Steam just doesn’t screenshot, tried different keys, reinstalling DB, and disabling/re-enabling screenshotting. Steam screenshot still work in Rocket League.
-Greenshot & print-screen give me a black screen with small windows XP style window bar in the top left (taken with print-screen, pasted into paint and saved)
-The steam overlay works, as does the FPS counter.

Does anyone else have this issue?
Does anyone have a solution for me?

Thanks,
DMM

I reported this a few weeks ago. In Dirty Bomb my screenshots don’t work intermittently. When I push my screenshot button it does a little lag jitter (like it does when you take a screenshot) so it obviously recognizes I’m trying to do something but it never makes the noise or takes the screenshot. I haven’t been able to track down the reason why yet. Some times it doesn’t work for an entire game, other times it will work again after 30 seconds etc. It is really annoying when this happens when I am trying to take a screenshot of a bug and can’t.

My thread on it. I’m glad to hear someone else is experiencing the same problem though.

Which shortcut keys are using for Steam?

(DarkMatterMatt) #4

F12, tried Alt + F12, and F11. I don’t believe that the key is the problem as it works (successfully takes screenshots) in Rocket League.

Thanks for the quick replies though

Same here - tried to take a screenshot recently and the game seemed to stop for a brief amount of time as it usually does when pressing F12 in a Steam game, but apparently no screenshot was actually made. Guess the tale of us playing a whole team of Phantoms (and actually winning the game) will remain a tale passed down from generation to generation with no screenshot to prove.

(TheShmoo) #6

Strange, I just made some screenshots yesterday with F12…

(FalC_16) #7

I used to be able to do screenshots by “printscreen” button. Now it doesn’t work. So you guys saying F12 works?

(BazBling) #8

F12 was working for me a couple of days ago too…

(DarkMatterMatt) #9

It appears to work for some people, and not work for others (Doesn’t work for 3 people so far, confirmed working for 2 people)

(GildedDark) #10

F12 Doesn’t work for me 90% of the time
I managed to get one screenshot out of say 12ish tries yesterday

(DarkMatterMatt) #11

@RazielWarmonic any ideas? seems it’s not just me. My screenshot used to work just fine.

Just had a thought:
I tried to install a mumble crosshair overlay and it never showed up (I could get it to work). I tried another similar program and that didn’t work either. Is there something in DB that ‘blocks’ other programs from viewing/editing the screen (like in Nexon Game Security)?

To the other people that can’t screenshot; are any of you using mumble overlays?

(doxjq) #13

Yeah I am using mumble, so you could be onto something there.

(doxjq) #14

My screenshots do work some times though. It’s intermittent. That’s the annoying thing haha.

You could try using other keys other than the function keys. I use Home, for an instance, and End to open the overlay. It works for me.

I use a Mumble Overlay Crosshair, and my screenshots work perfectly fine.

Steam has had a recurring issue with screenshots and windowed mode. From previous experience, Steam screenshots ( F12 ) only work when a game is in Fullscreen mode, and third party screenshotting software (e.g. Gyazo, Puu.sh) only work when a game is in Windowed Mode.

Note that if you try to change the setting in-game it will always say “Windowed: ON” even if it isn’t, so be sure to do it in the Menu’s.

Regarding the Mumble Crosshair. There is a bug of sorts with Windows 10 and the current version of Mumble. I had trouble getting my crosshair to show up with the latest version, as I run Windows 10.

However I have managed to get mine sorted by resorting to an older version of Mumble. I’m currently running Mumble version 1.2.10, which can be downloaded here: https://github.com/mumble-voip/mumble/releases/tag/1.2.10

Whether these two points are linked i’m not sure. If you have not tried to use the Steam screenshot shortcut while Mumble is not open, i’d suggest doing so. If you still have no result, the only other option would be to reinstall your Steam. Just be sure to backup all of your games files before hand.

Tried both of these with no success :disappointed:

How did you do it? I haven’t had any success with the latest version of mumble or 1.2.10 on Windows 10 Pro (I tried using this tutorial: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=470015172). Also I haven’t ever used mumble before, so there might be something really obvious that I’m missing

Had this problem long before I tried mumble  Ill probably try re-installing steam this week and see if that does anything

Thanks for the reply

I used a different guide for setting up the crosshair, however they say the same thing.

Are your graphics card drivers up to date? I read somewhere that certain, recent drivers are causing a handful of people issues with their Mumble crosshairs whilst using Windows 10. If they are in fact up to date, you could test older versions of the graphics card drivers, or wait for a new driver to release.

A side-note. I doubt that you havnt thought of testing this. But I’m required to mention this as it is the difference between your crosshair working or not working… The Mumble crosshair will only work if you have launched mumble before you have launched Dirty Bomb. If you would like further assistance you can hit me up at http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198055603168/

(DarkMatterMatt) #19

Yep they’re up to date, and yep, I’ve had a lot of NVidia drivers + Windows 10 issues before, so that is a very valid possibility  I also am not very inclined to go through the tedious process of testing multiple different drivers

Yeah thought it might work like this so I’ve tried it.

Thanks for the offer, might take you up on it when I have a bit more time (or am more desperate for Mumble)

This morning I uninstalled Steam (along with all my games) and reinstalled them all. Screenshot working again, no clue what I did to break them
