Steam Overlay Messages Causes LAG

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1
Intel i7 860 Processor
ATI Radeon HD 5850 with 11.5a drivers
4GB RAM

Game runs fine, but the moment an alert comes in through Steam (lower-right corner of the screen) whether it’s a message from a friend or an alert to let you know that someone just came online - the game becomes hugely laggy and the FPS drops to around 7 or so.

Anyone else experiencing anything like this? It makes it unbearable to play.

Also, please move the Back / Done buttons when in the options to a different location on the screen… when a Steam overlay message pops-up and you’re trying to quickly get out of the menus, you have to wait for the Steam pop-up to go away so you can see the buttons to click on.

I lag whenever i activate steam overlay

going to try downgrading drivers to 11.2 and see if that makes a difference.

11.2 drivers for the win… game runs much smoother now and no lag caused by steam overlay or steam pop-ups

You should always use the latest available drivers. That’s the whole point.

I can confirm this happens on 11.5a RC1

Steam overlay notification pop-ups cause lag for me as well. Just disable the pop-ups as a workaround (but you can keep the overlay itself enabled).
