Steam activation without the disk?

I hate asking these questions, but I’m really lost. I tried looking at Steam forums, but the terms I’m putting in the searches aren’t finding anything, and their forum is really gargantuan to check out every steamworks game for an answer.

I’m purchasing Brink via Best Buy but I’m kind of miles away finishing finals. Yet I will have an entire 3 day period of waiting to take my easiest final, meaning totally opportune time for Brink. So, does anyone know if you need the disk to activate your product on Steam or could i just enter the code that comes with the game?

I think you need to install it from the disk the first time. It may be possible to never need the disk again after that. At least this is how it works for Valve games purchased from stores.

The answer to never needing the disk again is yes, you don’t ever need the disk, even for re-installation.

This is Steamwork, so it’s basically has the same properties as a Valve game.

I think you don’t need the disk. You just need the serial key to download/install a game.

You just need the serial key.

In the past, you had to keep your disk in the drive when you entire the serial number. After that, you can discard the disk.

But it has been a long time I bought physical media for the PC (for Steam). So I am not sure if this still applies today.

Think you can just enter the key in Steam and download the game, if you wish…
