Stealing maps AGAIN!

(Red*Uk) #1

My friend Heirpie pointed me too a german site http://www.etmaps.de/4663.html run by ChiemseeMan.
They have one of my maps on there :bash: the map in question is pb_cradle, since this map was only sent to only one trustworthy person, to test on his GeForce i was like wtf how???
It seems the scan ftp server for pk3’s…
Just thought u people should be aware of this site !

Edit: took out strung up…etc now i’ve chilled a little

(No1_sonuk) #2

Did you ask him to remove it?

(Marko) #3

he put daybreak & citadel_objective up there because I seem to have had a leak during a test day… If you ask, he’ll remove it ASAP. I just think it’s a pity he dosen’t check the map maker is ready to release the map before putting up in public…

(Ifurita) #4

LOL, he put Rommel_a1 up even though the graphic link he posted clearly states “Concept Development” and “Not for Public”

(seven_dc) #5

How did he get his hand on that one?!!? Did you had it in public awailable?

(Ifurita) #6

yes, I did. On fileplanet, though it’s not as publically available. That’s why it’s not really a big deal for me. It just seems silly for someone to post a map like that. At least anyone downloading it can see from the splash graphic what they are getting

(Red*Uk) #7

Actualy i aint mailed him yet , Was real angry when posting this :stuck_out_tongue:
but its impossable that he has got my map from my tester friend and i heard that they have a ftp scanner which looks for pk3’s on ftp

(CptnTriscuit) #8

Guess you need to add “die Konzeptentwicklung” and “Das will ich Ihnen nicht raten verteilen!” to the disclaimer…

(Berzerkr) #9

@ Red*Uk:

Who was telling you this with the FTP-Scanner?? A FTP-Scanner is really not needed, ASE does the same job. If the server had no password, everyone becomes the map from the server - and then it’s just a matter of time until it’s hosted.
Make sure that the server who is running the map is password-protected and all is fine.
And it’s better you add a short ReadMe into the pk3.

@ Ifurita:

You wrote “Not for Pubs” in the splash-screen of Rommel’s Cache. But otherwise you self was uploading the map to GameSpy, where everyone who is registered can download the map. What now? Public version with splash-screen from an older version? If you don’t want that the map is hosted by others, upload it to your own webspace or send it to choosen persons via eMail, but do not post a download-link into a forum who everyone can read in it. As soon as you do this, it’s available for everyone.

@ CptnTriscuit:

Write better: “Konzeptentwicklung - Hosting durch Drittanbieter Verboten!” on the top line of the ReadMe, because nearly no one (including me) is reading the Disclaimer.

(Red*Uk) #10

Well the map should and as far as i know, never have been on a game server, only me and a good friend had the map, it was upped to the CoI server for a max off 2hrs and it never ran on no game server.

(MadJack) #11

2 hrs is plenty of time to send it to someone. Also, are you sure it was deleted after that? And last, are you sure the CoI server admin is reliable?

(DaRkFiRe) #12

Same thing happened to me awhile ago.

http://www.splashdamage.com/index.php?name=pnPHPbb2&file=viewtopic&t=6546&highlight=todliche

If you scroll down to the bottom, you’ll see my map Todliche. They somehow managed to rip it in the beta stages too. Easy fix: Email the guy, he’ll take it off asap…

(Red*Uk) #13

2 hrs yeh i was lazy \o/ but the webserver only has me and the owner as Admin so… Also the map would never have been on a game server, and if it did then autodownload is always off on my home pc and my friends, so password means jack afaik.
also in the pk3 is a real small readme i know now that i shoudl include “not for public blah blah” but if its a quick rap it up and send it that aint too easy :stuck_out_tongue:
And there are other on their with same thing. (not sure if fidel or rollator wanted there map’s on there cause i think there in the PB comp too)
U know guys patience… sit back chill… dont steal MAPS!!!

(DG) #14

err guys if you dont put “do not host” or whatever somewhere blatant, any map is basically free game for hosting. you want people going around asking permisson for every file they host? get a grip, permission is assumed - you have to make it blatantly obvious if you want something to not be hosted. putting a readme inside the .pk3 should be done - but in addition to one inside the zip. and dont be too surpised if that one doesnt get read either.

btw Infurita when I ran the map I assumed “not for public” meant the map was not intended for use on public servers. Some mappers release alpha, beta, beta2, beta345467, final, final2, newfinal, final_te… and so on and so on, if youre a file host you have to either go to the effort of trying to only upload “finals” (this is a ridiculous pain in the arse, btw) or just upload anything & everything.

only thing anyone has justifiable reason to be bothered about is if they refuse to take it down. I wouldnt be at all surprised if this guy thinks he’s doing a service to the community by hosting all sorts of maps only for some little fuck to go around posting that he “should be strung up by the bollocks and left to rot!!!” by way of thanks for his time and bandwidth. OK so maybe he just goes around nicking maps and hosting them with the intention of making them available for people to STEAL and claim as their own. Because like, there would be a point to that.

(Red*Uk) #15

First and i wont repeat this again , the map was not on no game server… nor was it for avalble for public hosting.(no url given out) and beside guessing the url there was noway to get the map ,
It was a case of talkin on msn then saying you wanna try it “yeh” so i packed it ,then upped it!
As for the hosting i’am grateful that u support the E.T community and it does look like a good site if only they could check first!
and as for “little fucker” Step up from the modem dickhead!

(DG) #16

hi?

(Drakir) #17

I totally agree with Red on this issue.
If you are about to place a file on your webpage u need to make sure that u are not doing anything wrong. If you are a fileserver holder its your responsibility to read any included ReadMe file to make sure you are making it publicly available legally. Just because u find a file somewhere, it doesnt make it legal to share if it has some kind of disclamer that says so or any kind of copyright.

If i have the doom3_beta.zip leak and just rename it to doom3_beta.pk3 doesnt make it legal to share.

I know “loffy” for instance has a good way of sharing his tests, he uses the disclaimer in the .pk3 file name, Like “mapname_alpha1_do_not_share.pk3” !!! So to all of you testing your maps, make sure there is a disclaimer somewhere making it illegal to share the file.

(Marko) #18

in my 2 betas that were robbed, I had put “NOT TO BE RELEASED IN PUBLIC” in the splash screen logo and in the .arena, meaning it was also written in text and bright red while the map was loading… but they still got up on that site…

(Schaffer) #19

The thing that really annoys me about map theives is that it creates a distrust in the community. I do a lot of Beta testing and I know that the mappers I have worked with trust me reasonably well but what about someone I havn’t worked with. It seems that some people just can’t read so that it dosn’t matter what you do. You could put a message in the area file while the map is loading, something on the splash screen or in a read me or something else. Some people just don’t get it. I even read an article in the forum asking who did map X earlier tonight. There is a read me in the map pack and the second line in there says who did it.

Maybe a suggestion would be to put something into the map that can’t be removed. This might be a custom image that says for testing or some sort of entity that says for testing not publically available. just makes more work for the mapper but it might be more obvious to idiots.

Just my 2 cents.
