State of the Forums

First things first. I have been here a very long time. Back in its infancy, these forums were relatively inactive, but had a great close-knit community. then SD dropped a few new titles, and more people came; some of which were habitual trolls (not pointing any fingers).

Now brink released and all there is on these forums, day after day is trolling, flaming, and a general lack of useful information. I fear the SD community itself may be falling apart as we speak.

the best way to clear this up is to have the admins/mods get very strict in regards to trolling/flaming. any subtle trolling results in an ip ban. i have seen this work on many forums before this one, to great success.

discuss.

I agree but if we were only permitted to say nice things about Brink…these forums would be a ghost town.

(stealth6) #3

Why is this under the Brink Board? As far as I can tell it’s with regards to the forum management.

Metatrolled!

Subtle trolling? That could be accidents. For example, I may be annoying at times (I admit it), and we all are, but normally when I discuss thing seriously I try to be fairly civil about it. (As I hope I am being now)

I think that any suggestions should be done politely, and any faults with the game should be spoken politely as well. (Which, I have to admit, I was rather mean in the 14% club and gave out a few spoilers. I’m sorry.)

But perhaps for ‘subtle trolling’ you should only get a waring saying, “Okay, your really being mean, be a little nicer.” Usually if you complain in the right way the SD guys will agree with you or explain why they couldn’t do X or Y. (For instance, there was a thread about the lack of distinguishing marks on the map, the SD guys admitted this.)

We should instead say, it is more about the fact that you admit you were wrong, and try to fix it. If you still are a blatant A hole you should then be temporarily banned. (Maybe you were having a bad day?) After that, you should be banned for a year. Or at least until your next purchase of their game. Maybe only people who have bought there game should be able to comment on the forums. That would make sure we at least don’t have RANDOM trollers coming in. The people should at least have the game.

Sincerely,

RabidAnubis

Its a double- edged sword really. I’m sure it was a much more close-knit community back then, Tom. But it would of also been hard to find newbies to group with.

I’m still in my infancy here, but I’ve seen it grow IMMENSELY since the release of Brink. And its due to the population explosion that I’ve met some great gamers to catch up with!

Unfortunately, the downside is sifting through the trolls and wankers to meet the genuine players.

But surely there must be another forum website made for SD original fans. If not, it may be a good idea. “Resistance Is Futile” was made by a good lot of blokes who originated from here and now its my favorite forum to hang out. (But I always refer back here for more “official” business)

Yeah and lots of the new people mistake banter as personal attacks on their ‘club’…

(snoopycat) #8

What is it with you people and censorship? Ban this, moderate that. Give us more cops to protect us from opinions we dont like. Ffs. Heres an idea. If you’re so delicate that you cant read opposing opinions without bursting into tears and begging for more cops, then why not go start a forum or a private fb group. That way you can be certain you wont read anything that will reduce you to tears, or pleas for the cops to rescue you from the awful people who dont like what you like

Censorship is definitly not a good thing, but I can see people calling for it in some moments. People that drop a negativ one-liner in about every thread are annoying and disruptive and thats also their only intention. There are differences between voiceing criticism and being just disruptive while venting for whatever reason. Spreading lies and false information for flame purpose should not be tolerated, thats also beyond censorship as its not about opinions anymore.

Check out rahdos thread where we got real constructive criticism. That was a good example of how it should be.

(snoopycat) #10

Censorship should be kept for things such as child porn, extreme ideaologies and incitement to violence. It should not be used for nonsense like video games. The trolling on here goes both ways. I’ve seen the defence force spreading misinformation but i doubt you’d be calling for any of those people to be banned. Although that would be hilarious. Imagine the weeping and wailing of the clique if one of their own was ip banned.

(murka) #11

The influx of new people is quite bothersome indeed. Most posts are filled with garbage and make reading most threads a waste of time. The ignore function does make it better, but it shouldn’t be like that, what if they say anything important.

so stop trolling with your troll face !
and maybe one day you gonna get some respect !

(Tom12121112) #13

only good things can come from censorship in forums. it keeps the peace and allows for more civilized conversations. i have been a moderator on almost 20 forums in the past, and instantly banning people for even slight trolling has done wonders for the community as a whole.

(snoopycat) #14

Censorship should not be used for trivialities like opinions of video games or people throwing abuse at each other. I moderate forums too. Forums where the users are free to express themselves in any way they like as long as they don’t break the law. Guess what, it works. I would be ashamed of myself if i ever sank so low as to use censorship to ban a troll.

(Tom12121112) #15

my last word on the matter:

you guys got trolled.

(snoopycat) #16

Lame excuse. Never expect honesty from someone who needs to hide behind censorship

(Throbblefoot) #17

Not to mention “lame attempt at trolling.” Completely transparent from the outset.

Yeah, I remember the good old gold age, when I was in these forums like 3 weeks ago, and they were shiny and not filled with noobs… Ahhhh sweet sweet memories!
