State of Play: On Mercs, Balance and Dome

(montheponies) #21

Thanks for the update - the longer spawntimes on SW should help with the current meatgrind around objectives. Interested to see the direction Dome takes as the poster boy for maps going forward.

Not sure I’m enthused about the characterful mercs, sounds like a nightmare to balance where we turn each 1v1 encounter into a FPS rock, paper, scissors. But as ever will keep an open mind.

Ability counters required.

(tokamak) #23

Not every merc needs to be equally adequate in combat. This is important and it avoids this rock-paper-scissor thing you tend to have going in TF2.

Think of mercs as roles that stretch beyond killing. Some are great at killing while others are great at letting others kill easier or letting enemies get killed more easily. Some are awesome at none of that but are amazing at manipualting the map in such a way that it will secure the team a stronger dominance on the map.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but do you ever actually play this game? It’s just everytime I read your posts it’s like reading someone describing how a game in theory could be good, in the same way that a scripted scene from a film would happen - except it’s multiplayer and those scenes rarely to never occur as the other ‘actors’ dont have the same script as you…

Most folk, I think, play FPS games to shoot and kill others. It’s really simple - if that’s not terribly satisfying then all the theorycrafting in the world isnt going to help you.

However, open mind etc etc…

The Dome-post is on the way, if i understood correctly.
“We’ll be getting an iterated version of Dome out to you soon, along with a blog post detailing what’s happened with the previous version of the map as it’s been live and explaining why we’ve gone the way we have for the updates.”

what i read is:
we are currently focusing on Dome, and the details will be dicussed soon in another blog-post.
Our focus caontinues to be on blockout maps, and we hope when you see how much has changed with Dome you’ll understand why.

:stroggtapir:
I hope this does not mean dome is now in full colours, like some other blockout maps we had.

Yes but it sounds like we get the map and the blog post at the same time.
There is no input there…

Rather than communicating ideas they are justifying changes… A huge difference.

well, as a matter of fact i totally agree, that we are not getting dialog about most important features of the game.
and dialogs are much more benefical for the game.
this is very bad.

(tokamak) #33

Please don’t make us move there SD. I want to stay here.

(spookify) #34

Doesnt work anyway haha!!

(Destroy666) #35
I hope all mercs move at the same speed with knife out and Pistol…

Then when they switch to their main they slow like Rhino or Fragger or Thunder but thats it…
So… You’re saying that heavy mercs should gain speed when switching weapons? Even though it’s not like the SMGs vanish completely and they can be picked again (no magical weight loss)? And fat Rhino with a knife should be as fast as agile Proxy?

No, please just no. I can’t even imagine how awful it would be.

(Silvanoshi) #36

As well as giving everyone a general idea of what’s going on with Dome, the post will help to provide context and insight into the changes to help speed up the feedback process once you guys actually get to sink your teeth into the updated version.

While there may be higher-level notions that can be discussed prior to getting your hands on a build; getting a large amount of solid, somewhat consistent, feedback from people before they actually get to experience the change is extremely difficult. This is something that we can possibly look at in future, although we’re currently investigating one or two other avenues in terms of getting feedback earlier first.

Don’t worry, we’ll be keeping the SD forums up and running here. We won’t be leaving ;).

Yep…

Just because his body is fat doesnt mean he cant run as fast… Even in real life…

A 350 defensive lineman can run faster then most chicks that size…

with different stamina bar, why not try it?
not 100% of proxy speed though, but not a turtle-speed as well.

One thing that could be worth trying, is to organise a 6v6 with 2 team captains given a map of the map beforehand. It’s only my personal opinion of course, but pub play without people using tactics only gives a very limited view of what a map is like. Of course, the majority of play is going to be on a pub, but I feel that a lot of the time, what can be ‘got away with’ or ‘not highlighted’ by pub play, would actually be disastrous in the long run when people get on the servers and play a bit harder.

What I mean is that even for myself, most of the time i’m just playing to have a bit of fun and not really taking things too seriously. Once you play the maps with the clear intent of giving the opposition a kicking with no holds barred, that’s a different matter entirely and I think is more likely to highlight the problem areas, some of which I hate to say it, seem huge

I maybe miss understanding your points but I think this game is going to have two options in the future… Ranked and unranked… I think both will actually play the same so 5v5 should be what we are testing in SW pub right now…

I would go on a limb and also say most people will play ranked but I know that is not true… I played LOL for over 2 years and never once played a ranked game… I was a total LOL noob though and I am sure there will be total FPS noobs out there…

With so much of the final game missing it is so hard to see a finished product… It is also hard to give feedback because we really have no idea what this game is going to look like when it is done in 9 years…
