Stat tracking in-game

(II Captain K II) #1

So as a PS3 owner who plans to buy this game on release day, I’m wondering what SD’s approach to in-game statistics will be. They seem to understand the necessary components of creating a successful team shooter, but I’m concerned about the kill death ratio whores that call of duty has given a disgusting birth to.

Even if there are xp bonuses for co-operating and completing objectives, the bottom line is that there will still be tons of campers and kill whores as long as there is a enduring record to be kept. That’s why you still see tons of snipers in supposedly team based shooters like BF:BC2 and MAG. So has there been any word on how the player profiles/stat tracking will work, or can I just take it as a given that it will be present?

Short answer from a while back suggests that global stats like K/D and W/L suck and won’t be in the game.

If that’s changed I don’t know, nor do I think the stat reporting system has been detailed as yet. Hopefully the message is that it will have a lower emphasis than in many other games. However you’ll still need to contend with people racing for some stupid number, level, trophy or other sparkly stuff rather than just playing the game.

killing people is the least effective reward mechanism, completing, assiting in objectives rewards players at a much higher rate

(II Captain K II) #4

theoretically, yes, but in practice, no. People still get a reptilian satisfaction from killing tons of people in a video game, even if it means their team loses. Play any console game. Look at call of duty for example. Try playing Sabotage, and if you even try picking up the bomb, you are dead. Everyone just camps the bomb waiting for the moron who wanders by and tries to plant it. Its like that in most games, more or less.

I don’t play console games, nor do I play Camp 'n Snipe

(II Captain K II) #6

well good for you. too bad that’s not everybody.

(Nail) #7

I agree, it’s too bad. I’m a PC gamer, console problems don’t affect me. There’ll always be wannabe ninja snipers, if the game rewards alternate behaviour more, maybe they’ll change

(LyndonL) #8

A Ninja Sniper! OMG! Imagine that! Deadly from near AND afar! :open_mouth:

The world would never be safe!

(meisterbrau) #9

thx nail to once again point out, that you are not a console gamer and console problems are not your business.
Why do you have to post that in every single thread where the word “console” appears?

It has to be some kind of religious thing…

(tokamak) #10

Simply don’t celebrate kill/death ratios or bodycounts on the stats page.

(Exedore) #11

Some of you might have caught it in some of the reviews from the latest round of shows, but the final scoreboard at the end of the match does list Kills and Deaths, but it is ranked by XP. In the build we had at the shows, Medics and Engineers were always the high scorers, and by no coincidence the most important to the teams in Container City.

Further info on stats in general is one of the last things we’re holding back on releasing.

And just for the record, K/D is a lot older than the Call of Duty franchise! :stroggbanana:

(Kinjal) #12

ET style? i cant belive it, good news finaly. ETQW scoreboard gives a player much less info, i dont like it.

(Ragoo) #13

Very nice! I never liked the fact that I couldn’t see my/the other player’s Kills and Deaths in ET:QW

(SockDog) #14

Does this mean the map can be played with only medics and engineers on the team or that to play any other class you’ll be assured a mid table XP listing at the end of the map?

(Nail) #15

I think you’ll still need soldiers for explosives and operatives for hacking, and not everyone wants to be defined by their XP or K/D ratios

(BioSnark) #16

Keep in mind that class selection is supposed to be as dynamic as possible. Players don’t need to respawn to switch, classes aren’t locked for the entirety of a map and changing to an objective class is rewarded… particularly when there isn’t one already.

(SebaSOFT) #17

Agree, but in ETQW publics there were too many in the objective class, isn’t that a problem too?

(tokamak) #18

Yeah, for the team that has the wrong class balance that’s a problem and a disadvantage. Rightly so as it means teams get rewarded for coordination.

(SockDog) #19

My point is people do play to be top of the scoreboard (otherwise why include it and rank it by XP?). So if certain maps favour certain classes (by allowing them to earn more xp) then certain players will pick and stick to those classes to go top of the scoreboard or just to earn more of that brain numbing XP.

To be fair, I’m leaping on a few words here, likely unintential ones on the subject of XP. I just thought the whole XP system was meant to be fair and rewarding for all? If that’s the case how can two classes dominate the end of map scoreboard?

(INF3RN0) #20

I think I can sum it up by saying, solve one problem, create another. Let’s just hope that people enjoy the game more than the XP.
