Starting youtube despite Fair Use issues?

(Naonna) #1

Recently, multiple YouTubers have had to deal with their videos and even entire channels being taken down due to YouTube’s three strike policy. Even if copyright claims are proven false, and there fore illegal, a claimant can gain all ad revenue the content creator would have earned. (For more, just check for #WTFU [where’s the fair use]. The Nostalgia Critic (Doug Walker), YMS, and IHE channels have had lost massive amounts of money, and briefly, one of their channels).

https://youtu.be/QNZPQssir4E (good example of my worry)

Given this knowledge, Should I even bother with YouTube? I play a decent amount of Dirty Bomb, TF2, and rarely other games. While I don’t intend to even toggle on the monotization setting, What’s the point in putting forth work for a video or videos when 3 claims later, a channel can be shut down? - The claims don’t even have to be valid for punishment to occur.

To any of the YouTubers who focus on DB, Is this a problem?

Main question, though: Start YouTube or no?

Meh I do YT but I am small and don’t make much, also I have had some problems with copyright material but that is because I play games with music andnit usually slips through sometimes, but now I don’t play music while recording. I have seen channels that show gameplay but cut out the audio. You can do that if anything. When you upload it’ll tell you if it has 3rd party content. If it does I just scrap the vid then go back and cut out whatever song caused that. Gaming channels have it easy to avoid strikes imo. People who review have a much harder time :S

Here is my channel for reference and also shameless plug

The whole “loosing revenue” thing doesn’t really apply to you as a new YouTuber, especially since you don’t want monetisation anyways.

I say go for it if you want to share content for the sake of it.

Have a go at it you want to try and like it. If you do ever monetise your content just check through what you are allowed in your video, what you need permission for etc.
it might require some research and emails to other people about it but try your luck.

I started: played a round and talked over it live… then went to edit. Heard my own voice. Decided to postpone it. - Don’t think anyone would want to hear me talk over a 15 minute game.

ha no one likes their own voice :stuck_out_tongue:

(Naonna) #7

…Everyone forgets I’m male when they hear that voice. (20 years old now…) ‘-’;

(brennanfreak) #8

Forgive me for asking, but are you a trap?

(gg2ez) #9

Well if you wanna go ahead and sound manlier, take a fistfull of hair and proceed to stuff your throat with said hair. Guarunteed raspier voice or your money back.

All of this stuff to do with copyright that’s in the limelight right now, while a really important issue and is certainly something to be aware of, should not prevent you from being a part of the joy that is creating content on Youtube. Do it because it’s fun, not because you want to make money. Even the heavy hitters on YT have to hit seriously critical mass before it becomes a profitable venture, that’s when I’d start to worry about the monetization. It also seems to me like Patreon and the likes are far better for getting money back out of content creation.

(I’ve been on YT for like 8-9 years and produced lots of content over the last 6, though I’m no e-celebrity so don’t take my word for it)

@ValkyrieHunter32
puu.sh/lPzpc/1c45da90f9.jpg - I dunno.
Do I count?
*at least I didn’t link the kitty-costume this time.

Rather than Youtube, Vimeo or other similar sites are looking a bit attractive at the moment. Maybe even twitch.tv . There are already a lot of DB players there, so I’m pretty sure I’d just blend into the background. Good players: not bad like me. I’ll probably postpone starting, for the moment.

(brennanfreak) #12

@Naonna That answers the question then.

(NetflixandKill) #13

As long as you don’t play music (even “Royalty Free” music can be claimed if a record label takes possession of it later, even years later) and don’t touch other people’s content (“Reaction videos”, etc.) you should be fine.

(Naonna) #14

Also concerned that since there’s already plenty of other people who have interesting stuff to say in regards to DB, I’d have little to say. I’m pretty terrible at the game, so I’m pretty sure my live commentaries would just be me getting killed in stupid ways. - That aside, i’ll post here if I ever get a video put together - even if i dunno what i’d talk about.
