Stamina Bar in Brink

(Ultima) #1

So, I was in another thread, and I am taking no credit for this because I saw a guy named Achtung bring it up. It did get me thinking though, would this work in Brink? I know right away that many people will say no, but I also know that it’s a topic that might get some people thinking. I’m pretty sure everyone here knows what a stamina bar is and how it would be used in Brink, but just to make it clear, whenever you sprinted(pressing the S.M.A.R.T. button), a little bar would pop up. As you sprinted, the bar would gradually go down, and when you stopped it would start to refill. If it ran out however, you would have to wait for it to refill all the way, and your character would be unable to sprint until it did.

That being said, I think it would add a little more strategy, such as when someone is chasing you. You would think ‘Do I take the risk and stop sprinting to let it refill a little and hope he’s far enough behind that he doesn’t catch me, or do I risk letting it run out to get a little more distance in between us and take the risk of not being able to sprint for a while’. So, just tell me your thoughts, that’s it. Do you think it would be a good or bad thing to add in? Do you think it would fit into a game like Brink? Are you indifferent to the idea and don’t care either way? List your thoughts on it.

My knee-jerk reaction to it is “no thanks”.

I say so because:
Undoubtedly, if it were to be implemented, the light bodies would be able/coded to preform more parkour per stamina bar… they already have a massive advantage in what they can do/how they can traverse the geometry. Adding a stamina bar, unless very carefully balanced/coded would end up being just another reason not to play as a heavy.

Again, this is my reaction w/o really thinking in-depth about the idea.

/shrug

EDIT: Wanted to make sure you didn’t think I was just being contrarian, because you "no"d my Bull Rush post. I really do feel that the heavy is already severely limited in mobility, and adding stamina-drop while sprinting/SMARTing would just make them even less desirable/played.

I see where you’re coming from. Realistically, a Heavy would have a lower stamina bar. If they did that, it would make Heavies worse. However, if they made every body type the same length, which I don’t see them doing, Lights would still have an advantage. However, what if it was like the Health bar? Lights have less stamina(they run faster and have less muscle, so maybe less endurance?), Mediums have normal stamina(more muscle, more endurance), Heavies have the largest(same reasons). I know that’s not very realistic, but it’s a way to implement it, there could also be buffs for it. For example, the speed boost buff could be changed to increase stamina bar for a while, or maybe just add a new buff. However, I see it as a Medic buff, and since they have so many buffs already, well…

Sounds like a proper “challenging” game mechanic to be had. But then again, I’m pretty happy of being able to run as long as I want. Got my “knee-jerk no” reaction here.

Yeah, that’s why I think most people wouldn’t like it. If they did add it in the game, it would probably be unpopular, which is why I don’t know if it would be a good idea or not. Just trying to get peoples’ thoughts, expecting most to say no.

might be interesting if the current run speed became the walk speed.

The idea of a stamina bar in most games is to roll back the sprinting and hopping. ET had this.

In Brink, there would have to be a reason. I posted this in the Heavy Bullrush thread, because it was the only way I could think to make such a move work.

If that was the case, then each class would need its own move, as well as the Stamina Bar using all burley moves like Sprint, Jump, and whatever “C” move a class would have.

That said, when I see Light Players, just sprinting and sliding, and sprinting and sliding, i tend to want a Stamina Bar.

But Im not sure how Brinklike it would feel.

I would guess if this was the case, as i stated above, you would need more accurate and deadly weapons making the game more push push, sort of realistic game, vs, the action based gameplay we have now.

But lets not lie to ourselves, at least not as old school SD fans go, we’ve all been waiting for SD to take on ET again with a COD weapons feel. (sorry for the COD ref).
