Sprinting and shooting

(n-x) #1

I have now heard 2 sides of this. One side says, you should never sprint while shooting, because it messes with your weapon spread, thus push button to sprint. The other side says, just always sprint it doesnt matter too much for the weapon spread, thus toggle sprint.

As far as I can tell sprint only affects your forward movement, meaning if you strafe or walk backwards, you have the same speed and the same weapon spread, no matter if you walk or sprint. So in the end, it just increases your spread if you move forward and shoot while having sprinting activated (I am aware that shooting cancels sprinting and you start to walk. But nonetheless, “SetSprint true” is still activated in the background).

Is there any other perk to walk while shooting or is this really the only advantage of walking while shooting?

What do you use?

(Szakalot) #2

you cant sprint while shooting.

otherwise, imo push to sprint is a lot better for consistent longjumps, so unless you macro that, dont use toggle

(K1X455) #3

I don’t get it. Sprint is forward? What about strafe?

(n-x) #4

@Szakalot I am aware that you cant physically sprint while shooting. The shooting will slow you down to walking speed. But when you have sprint activated by pushing the button or toggle, it affects the spread.

And could you explain how push to sprint is better for consistent longjumps?

@K1X455 Try it out. strafe sideways or back up and switch between sprinting and walking. I didnt notice any difference.

Literally the only reason I use toggle sprint is because I had played a ton of Borderlands 2 (approximately 100 hours) before Dirty Bomb. Borderlands 2 has toggle sprint on default (or I set it that way) so I kinda got used to it and applied it to every game since.

I can do long jumps fine. Dunno what you are talking about.

If you try to shoot while sprinting you’ll immediately exit sprint and move normally

Me I like having it set to press, toggle felt too…automatic. Like I felt like I wasn’t in full control.

(BlackboltLW) #7

I use toggle because I could use my finger for something else

(bontsa) #8

Yea same here. Had sprint on toggle long before the change, but maybe half a year ago I switched my ADS to CTRL and shooting to spacebar in order to get jump/crouch into mousekeys. (I know I’ve practically painted myself into a corner with that one, not an issue in DB because I see no reason to have push to sprint, but in other games maybe)

I feel the phase of the game is such that sprinting is the default way of movement (which it pretty much is), and I find it easier to “process” so to speak to have the default option on almost all the time, and just hit the button when I want to do the “extra” stuff, walking in this case.

Due to needing to long jump it makes it is very hard for me to press a sprint button, press the crouch button and jump all at the same time without moving one of those buttons to my mouse (which I don’t want to do). By using sprint toggle I remove the need to hold sprint so I can move more crisply and not rely on macros.

Also, you can’t shoot while sprinting. So I am confused by that

@Kelben Sprint does increase weapon sprint since closed beta so slow down and ADS when at a distance otherwise, close in and sprint/strafe when CQB.

@1:25 L Pansy Scott mentions that sprinting does increase spread

Also, there’s a little known secret about firing-on-the-go (FTG) we recently are investigating as a discovery from hack from high hit percentage.

I just bound long jump to alt so I don’t have to rely on Ctrl or C. I’m really glad I have the option to do so since I actually press Ctrl and Shift with my thumb, for some stupid reason that I do anyways.

(K1X455) #12

@STARRYSOCK why not just long jump all the time, and bind it to space_bar?

(Press E) #13

@K1X455 Mostly just because I’m used to normal jump being spacebar I guess. I didn’t even have a key for longjump until I was around level 30, and to change how I do things now wouldn’t be that useful to me when my current method works fine.

I still use normal jump frequently enough to have it there anyways, so it’s not a big deal to me.

(Wolf_Darkrose) #14

rather toggle so i dont fuck up my momentum plus even after a long jump the thing speeds itself right back up as fast as possible. as any of the low HP classes i find it a must.

(GatoCommodore) #15

i like it default

@K1X455 Watching this video actually made me make this thread. I assumed also the whole time, that having sprinting activated increases your spread. But when I looked a bit further into it, I saw that the spread indicator only widens, when you have sprint activated and move forward. It doesnt widen when you move left, right, or back. So therefore I would like to know if having sprinting activated also affacts your spread in some way, when you move in any other direction than forward.

@Amerika I know you cant sprint while shooting. What I meant is, move forward and shooting while sprint is activated (I know it get canceled to walking speed) I will edit my first post to make this clearer.

I use press because I don’t always want to be running. There are sometimes I’d rather take my time, walk towards the corner while reloading or checking the map instead of running everywhere. Toggling takes away that option to take a pause and figure out where you’re at. Can be super helpful so you don’t rush headlong into your death.

There’s actually a bug with hold to sprint where sprinting can become “stuck” until you tap shift (or your sprint key) again. Seems to have something to do with long jumping, which leads to you sprinting even if you’re just holding forward.

As for the topic of spread, I’m pretty sure shooting coming out of sprint would act as a “shortcut” to the phase where your weapon is at full bloom. I believe bullet spread is based on movement. Jumping has a set spread, as does sprinting, side strafing, crouching, and natural bullet spread from firing the weapon. I believe some may take affect simultaneously, for instance of your weapon is at full spread due to continously firing, jumping may increase the spread even further.

From my minor tests using the “full crosshair” - provided it is accurate, spread has a reset timer (this should be common knowledge), triggered by standing idle. Therefore shooting coming out of sprint would not allow time for a spread reset, leading to your initial shot being at full bloom (i.e. your first shot accuracy is low). So I don’t think toggle has anything to do with it, especially as a “background process”.

This video is from June 2015. Has it not changed since?

I just always sprint. I used to push and hold but I see no reason not to always sprint. If I need to slow down I use sights.

(K1X455) #20

@MidnightButterSweats I’m not sure, but it’s one of those things that hasn’t changed much I suppose.
