Springfield public beta released!

(Maggumaster) #1

It´s done!
Ok, almost done… this is the first public version of the Springfield Map for Enemy Terrirory. Beta, because there still some things to do. I want to improve gameplay, performence and so on. But i thought it is time for you out there to get something.

So here it is!

Get it from:
http://www.maggusoft.de.vu

Btw, the homepage is beta, too

OMG! nice work by the details and enviroment, but when the map is FSP hell in 20 frames per second i do not think this is my favourite map. I just guessing when some FieldOps calls an arty or air strike everything willl sloooowww dooowwwn.

Would intense fog with fog clipping worked?

Fog would be a solution, but it would destroy the athmosphere, i think. I know performence is crappy. Maybe some more suggestions how i could improve that would help.

(deej) #4

hey maggumaster do you have a direct link to the file since wget (linux) doesn’t understand PHP, and I don’t want to upload 19 Megs at 128 k/S  but I do want to host the file on our server :-D!

(DeAtHmAsTeR) #5

just downloading the map now - hopefully i’l get a decent fps - im impressed with just the screenshots of map and i admit you are very brave
well done mate.

those models must have taken you a while!

About the performance-

I dont know how true to Springfield you want to keep things - or if your just going for the atmosphere - but having big structural things in the way could help a lot

Also making sure everything that is needed to be detail is, It is definitly not good having buildings and tall walls as details

It could be the models that are slowly it down? anyway i shall have a looky now and report back if i find anything

I like the map for its artistry and authenticity (more or less) to Springfield and the Simpson’s universe but it is absolutely unplayable as an ET map. This is where you will see the limits of the Quake 3 engine; the Unreal Tournament engine is more preferable for this kind of map IMO.

The load time is just extraneously long and part of that has to do with the details in the map. There are things you can cut to make it more playable and what those are have already been mentioned in the Springfield private beta thread.

My suggestion: I think you should release two different maps, one for the fans who won’t mind the details and one for gameplay purpose. The gameplay map should take creative licenses to make the map playable (e.g. eliminating details, arranging buildings in a way that plays to the the spatial strength of the Quake 3 engine).

(Maggumaster) #7

That´t a good idea with that 2 maps. I´ll think about this.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #8

well this defintly was well worth the wait

Great Job

(GRouZER) #9

AWSOME!
Everything is so detailed, great job!
This is the best map i’ve ever seen.
Now the only thing which is missing are the skins :stuck_out_tongue: .

Some stuff i’ve found which isn’t correct:

  • Phone @ bus is to big :stuck_out_tongue: .
  • A front door is missing.
(i have sent the screens to youl)

(Drakir) #10

Nice job mate…looks really great! Only had a quick run through the map.

(fattakin) #11

Is there a hunkmegs settings? Im getting:
Hunk_AllocateTempMemory:failed on 1048632 ;(

Edit: Ive tried putting my hunkmegs upto 192 and tried hosting a server locally on my PC and it hasnt worked

(MadMaximus) #12

i switched mine from 128 to 200 just to get the map to load, or so i thought… it’s just a huge map so thats why it took me so long to load it.
nice looking map, quite a bit of detail. fun to just wander around and look at it all. fps kills me though… i get similar fps on radar using binocs and watching and airstrike go down.

but a real nice map otherwise. well done. maybe there are ways to improve the fps from just the street view when your moving around. but overall, a real nice job on the map.

I’ve just had a first look at the map.
As far as I’ve been alon I can not tell something about gameplay.
I like the texturing very much.
Very nice work.

But I’ve had the impression that the measurements are to small.

(Big Boss) #15

Very nicely done Simpsons fan dream come true to walk around Springfield like that very cool just need some Simpsons skins now.

(deej) #16

thanks Slick. Map is available on our custom server now. Connect to fragland.org:27778 woohoo!

(deej) #17

Well we played a couple of matches on it with a limited number of players and these are the remarks:

  • amazing, woow, cool, impressive, OMFG  BIG CONGRATS MAGGUMASTER. You have made an awesome map with an amount of detail I have never seen before…
  • I have tons of ideas for easter eggs you could plant in the houses
  • the warping effects are super!!!

In terms of playability

  • it is hard to spot opponents because of the “flashy” colors of the houses, they don’t contrast too much
  • fighting around Jebbediah is a bitch and a killer for FPS. it gives laggy impressions. my FPS drops from 76 to 38 in there (P4 2.8GHz, 1 GB RAM, ATI 9800 PRO)
  • spawn in Simpson’s house can be crowdy. Spawn behind the house would be better
  • getting on the roof of the kwik-e-mart is hilarious and a bitch for axis if the mart is held by allies
  • the poison barrels have killed many already  shoving enemies in there when you’re out of ammo works great
  • hiding behind the counter in Moe’s tavern is a good surprise but since that door doesn’t make a sound you kinda miss some allies running through sometimes
  • once the truck’s past the 2nd barrier game’s over unless you have a real panzer fest

So if I might make a suggestion, try to work on details to make the map “lighter” for FPS which should improve the smoothness. That’s our main concern.

But again CONGRATS Maggu, a-w-e-s-o-m-e map!!!

Right, i have had a look at the map and i too think it is quite small measuring wise - it seems if you make it around 1.5 times bigger or 1.25 it would be better. this would also cause taller structural areas and help in FPS.

Everything is too damn detailed! Mainly im talking about the Simpsons house - the amount of stuff you have added in the bedrooms is astonishing but a large factor in the huge filesize and fps.

I also found light white patches around places, i thought they were puddles but they are seen to frequently.

You have blocked off many areas - perhaps making things closer together - but making things bigger - and creating more routes to Moe’s Tavern ( and the warp to the PowerPlant) would be ideal gameplay wise. So removing some of the blocked off areas and adding more routes.

Another HUGE thing which you might need to think about if you want to keep your ass clean is -

Copyright - If i am not wrong you could be sued for millions because you are using Springfield in a Enemy Territory Map.
Also you have used the Simpsons photo’s e.t.c and the names of the Buildings - Moe’s Taven, Kwik - E - Mart.

Im not sure if this is an issue because you arent selling the map - but if this was ever put on to a cd and sold with a magazine it might lead to problems

I slapped this on [ND80]Test Maps (207.44.246.63:2796)
so people can look around for a day or two.

When doing so, I noticed this on the
(Linux dedicated) server’s console:

WARNING: CM_GridPlane unresolvable

about fifty times. Happens every time I do
“map springfield_pb” (didn’t check restarts).

Just thought it might provide a clue to the
FPS problem.
