Spiral staircase

(Theisy) #1

I want to incorporate a spiral staircase into my map for my church, is this wise/brave/crazy.

Here is a screenshot of the very start of my work, it will improve.

I have realized that the stairs above are to low and need raising[/img]

Why

Geocities doesn’t allow hotlinking, you’ll have to copy and paste the link:

Having said that it looks like your sizes are off.

your guy looks confused…
does a giant live in here??? :suspicious:

Hmm now spiral stair cases - they are a challenge - first off - dont make it from curves - make it from normal brushes.

2nd - the spiral you want to wrap your stairs around would be better as a square - then from xy view (top down) plan where your steps will go.

The problem is having steps at the corners - having a 45 degree angle at each corner from the centre spiral will be simpler than having 22.5 degrees.

Or if you dont want to play around with brush edges - make the steps at the corners of the spiral square 1 whole brush.

Screenie to help:

Thanks for the help

Thats a lot neater than what I currently have

i have a easier way to create staircase then the one with the link. however I wrote a Staircase generator using Javascript.
i will post a screeny here and if u guys would like to try it out. i will post a link to it.

This is what it looks like in the generator.

this is what it looks like in Radiant with a few more tweaking (adding in the handrail and stuff)

of course you can just make a 12-20 (depending on how many steps you want) brush and then cut it into wedges like a cake then raise each wedge one at a time. this way you can make a spiral staircase in about ten seconds, if you want an example downlaod the tool set for RTCW and load up the sample single player level that comes with that as it has a few spiral staircase

btw i like the look of the staircas egenerator please post the link.

This is my way to create spiral staircases:

  1. Create 2 brushes which serve as templates for the stairs. The brushes have just as much sides as the number of stairs for a 360° circle.
  2. Now I create brushes and fit the edges (key E - DrawEdges) to the one of the template brushes in top view. When the template brushes don’t fit the grid, I draw their edges too (usually I use the small template as the center column of the spiral staircase).
  3. Now make the stair the correct height.
  4. (Optionally) Adjust the lower side of the stairs.

I usually make 8 or 16 stairs for a 360° turn, since I only need to create 2 resp. 4 steps then. Afterwards I clone and rotate (90°).
When I want to align the first (lowest) step of the stair I rotate the template brushes before I start making the single steps.

I think it was in the Q3 days when bobtoolz were released and iirc he had something like that as a plugin for Radiant. Now, only the pit-o-matic has survived

Generator Link Here
it won’t automatically generate the handrail and the side holding bars like in my screeny, but u syould be able to use the generater to generate them and move the vertixs a bit to create them.

after generating it, copy and paste the data on right to a .map file and open it with radiant.

EDIT:
Sorry, forgot the l at end of .html

Generator Link Here

yeah, basically i generated 3 spiral brush groups. however the generator doesn’t have the ability to slop the brushes all together (because it won’t be a 6 surface brush, and my generator can only generate 6 surface brush right now, nothing more, nothing less)

so what i did was generate the steping boards first, then change the R1 to generate the rail that’s holding the boards, however in radiant i need to move the vertix so they will match. then i generate rail and do the same thing.

D’oh, this is all I get from that link http://www.uvic.ca/~brianho/ET/linkGen.htm the staircase you produced with the generator looks awesome. For the handrail you created another spiral staircase and increased the radius of the “invisible” centre pillar further out so that acted like the handrail right?

Edit:

Lol, sorry for that utterly useless comment, I meant the page loads up a “Page not found” page.

(MadJack) #15

Yeah, 404 here too :frowning:

(Hikaru) #16

i am planning on making the generator more specific into stair generating. (such as handrail and other feature)
but that will be in the future.

Still 404…

Same here, same link as before ain’t it? Do you want to try to email it to someone who can host it? I wish I had that ability :frowning:
Still I’d love to play about with the generator, it looks great
