Speed question (yeah its me heh)

Ola everyone!

As you may have noticed I have a big problem with the turtl’ish games nowaday and I was wondering :

If there arent any ranked server, would we be able to setup the server speed in some range? I mean it would be cool to have 3 to 5 different preselected setup (if you want to keep it somehow locked) or a range from 1 to 10 for exemple, with a filter so people can choose the speed they like the most.

Indeed there are dark places with this kind of setting : it can fractionate the community if people stay in one speed only (but it’ll be less biased the bigger the community is), map duration may be adapted according to the run speed, and maybe the weapon RoF because enemies would be able to escape more easily.

I think it wont be a real problem gameplay wise as all the player will have the same speed… I’m not talking about the pace or other stuff, just the general player run speed.

I also now that it’s too late anyway to implement such changes, I just hope SD thought about that for the dedicated server options -> at least a mod can be created :wink:

I think speed changes may affect how the bodytypes interact with the map. Being able to move faster means jumping slightly further, possibly opening up areas of the map that heavies couldn’t (shouldn’t?) get to before.

I’m all for a faster movement speed. There are plenty of slow movement shooters out there as it is, and regardless of the additional features, they still all feel the same. SD brought colour back to shooters… they should bring speed back too!

It would be an awesome idea Apples. I don’t think it’d fracture the community too much since most people probably won’t use the filter anyway. Jump distances could be a problem though. Would the pace increase make THAT much of a difference to jump distance though?

Simply increasing a movement speed cvar wont work, but if there exists a cvar that alters map/respawn time, jump height/speed etc i’m all for it, but it might be a lot of work to tweak.
Sadly, it’s impossible to unite all gamers, some want fast, some slow. A in-between value will not be good enough.

Well I remember the good ol sof2 days with seta g_speed and seta g_gravity, these 2 parameters only was actually fine to tweak the gameplay in a good way.

Sadly the games now are more complex so yeah it would demand time. And yup I totally forgot the (trick)jump problem

Sounds good though, but I guess balancing the entire game for 1 speed is enough work as it is. Balancing it for 10 means we get our game by 2025 if we’re lucky :S
