SPAWN AREAS

Errr… sure i can change my spawnpoints by clicking on flags in the limbo screen… or did some ETPro bugbag disable that and I just don’t know cuz i ve been mapping only for 4 weeks?

You are right that you can’t have default spawns once you click on a flag and thus leave the path of the autospawner… but as soon as ppl can click there once they should be able to click a second time too. If they don’t know when to do that or what for, something like default spawns won’t help them anyway cuz they need to learn the map badly

Disabling the initial spawn on Radar is a good idea though (McNite stomps with his foot :bump: )… road spawn features 3 exits, and I doubt that any team that lets itself get spawnkilled completely in a spawn with 3 exits would ever get the idea of using the initial spawn. Btw same with Goldrush… you never see the whiners (oh plz dont spawnkill us) use first allied spawn cuz who knows about it simply uses it.

Its just important that mappers create enough exits from a spawn to prevent massive spawn overkill when there is no second spawn. Look at supplydepot: lots of spawnkill by Panzerfaust at axis spawn cuz a lot of ppl forget about the 2nd exit.

1st conclusion: you won’t make bad players play better by forcing their spawns… its just that the good players would have no choice and get spawnkilled together with the noobs
2nd conclusion: if you are tired of being the good player getting killed together with all the noobs or of having most deaths cuz you arrived at the objectives all alone, change the server and play on pro-servers (that s what I ve been doing for months, I would ve stopped playing ET at all if I hadn’t found out about servers where players know what to do)

but as soon as ppl can click there once they should be able to click a second time too
Then you might as well negate any autospawning and force manual throughout, because if you can click once, you can keep clicking.
The whole point of autospawning is to update constantly without requiring that click.
EG on railgun I (as Allies) quite often choose not to spawn at the depot for certain parts of the map (while the tug still hasn’t reached the track switch).
Now, should it get past and the depot flag is under constant attack (IE swapping sides) it’s bloody hard to click on that flag to spawn there when it’s important to do so - even assuming your spawn timer rolls over when your team has it, chances are you’ll miss it.

Take Helmsdeep. I choose patrol point spawns. They disappear. Now I’m stuck for the rest of the map clicking through spawn flags, and this can backfire as described earlier for the compost because you spawn closest ‘as the crow flies’ which is not necessarily the actual closest movement-wise. It’s basically a limiting factor on map design, and that isn’t good.

Yea… but didn’t the discussion start where players leave the autospawn-thingy and have their first click on some other flag? So what? I think whoever chooses not to spawn standard sometime should be able to spawn where he wants for a second time too (AIAM)…

(G0-Gerbil) #24

I’ve no problem with that - the whole issue for me is that a clicking player has no way of getting back to autospawns which is sometimes essential.
The interface provides no mechanism for this, which is just downright lousy, and means in future I may have to design maps accordingly, which is another and extremely frustrating limitation.

I think that you don’t need to bother much about the fact that ppl who choose spawns on their own won’t spawn at default spawns automatically when the game goes on.
Whoever starts choosing flags on their own will learn the map and know which flag to choose when the game goes on.

As for a map like your LOTR-spiral-town-map… I think the only way to keep players in the game will be disabling the lower spawns as the game goes up the spiral (in case that map is giving you the headache about the spawns) maybe u dont need to disable all of them and let 2 - 3 open and then start disabling the initial ones… just an assumption :blah:

(G0-Gerbil) #26

Minas Tirith won’t be hard at all, I’ll be controlling spawns.
It’s not a particular map causing problems (although Radar, Battery and Helmsdeep all exhibit the unwanted behaviour).

I only recently set up the bind for autospawn, and until then all these maps caused me headaches when you over-ride the default and then needed to use the default, often at a second’s notice. This is me talking, and I think it’s fair to say many other players aren’t as ET-savvy as me.

Anyway, end of discussion for me. It’s crap and buggy but it ain’t gonna be fixed so I’m stuck with it

anyway, to end my part
A tip to mappers: design your map so there is as little spawn locations as possible for either teams. Else, make sure that as the mission proceeds, each new spawn acquired makes the last one pretty much useless.
Like in fueldump, goldrush, oasis, daybreak… each time the attacker captures a spawn, the upcoming objectives make the new spawn more convinient than the previous one.
Instead of having 2 spawn location to reach an objective, make 2 different routes from the same spawn (eg. water tunnel and old city wall in oasis, the 3 different paths in fueldump to reach the axis base!) That way players wont feel the need to force a spawn!

I dont wanna sound like a F***ing retard but can u lay down the whole way to put spawns in. I put the Allied and Axis spawns in, only 1 spot each (when my map is released u’ll c y [ but 16 on each side]) After that i put in the wolf obj on each side, THEN WHAT. Im going to be truthful and i am what u call a retarted newb when it come to scripting, i had an easy tyme with C&C tiberian sun, but that was easy, this is a whole new feild for me, and i just wanna learn the simplest way in retard english. I dont wanna be rude but if u dont mide tell me …First . . . Second . . . Third . . ., In a way speel it out for me, im 15 and id love to release a map, the way i have my textures in some of my freinds said it looked great ( yes ppl online not my neibors ) and they liked it, but they cant play it (they looked at it in the editor). So if u dont mind plz spell it out for me! Thnx. :bump: :banghead:

Seriously Goblin, use the damn search and you ll find more than you can read… go to the sticky and look for tutorials… use google for tutorials… btw the 2nd post in this tread already explained well (in case u don’t need a flag leave out the checkpoint and the script about the flag)
I m pretty sure NOBODY wants to write a tutorial just for you cuz you don’t wanna search for them yourself. If you are not content with the first tutorial, read a second one… try things out. My spawns and scripting took 3 days (yea its my first map too).
Btw… what s your mother tongue? In case its German, look at www.level-designer.de for good tutorials in German.

(nUllSkillZ) #30

That’s all you have to do for simple spawnpoints / locations.
Just give the “team_WOLF_objective” - entities the correct options:
Choose the “team_WOLF_objective”-entity, press “n” and then choose “default_allies” or “default_axis”.
And give the “team_CTF_redspawn” / “team_CTF_bluespawn” entities the options “invulnerable” and “startactive”.

(GoblinZeroIce) #31

im srry if u seem to think that way, but i have looked around, and found the same stuff over and over again, and i cant understand it, my native toung is english, and ive put in the things u said, the blue allied spawn and red axis spawn, and the team wolf obj, and set the tinges needed, when i go to play the game with gametype 2 and sv pure 0, it says couldnt find spawn point, so thats why ive come here to get a deeper explanation!

(G0-Gerbil) #32

Because you’ve probably not set the ‘start active’ flag on the spawn points?

(GoblinZeroIce) #33

nope, i set start active and involnerable, and on the team wolf obj i set axis for axis and allied for allied, and it says in game (cannot find spawn point! (could it be that i am using the newest version of gtk radient from qwradient.com, im not using the "recomended version from the special edition cd)

What worked best for me when things didn’t do like they should have is: delete all the spawns and wolf objectives, safe the map, get yourself a tutorial and work it through step by step. And if things don’t work out, try it again or look at another tutorial.
I strongly recommend you try that. And again: the first answer to your question provided EVERY information you need.
