Sparks and Arty - Value Studying

(BlackboltLW) #1

Sometimes I’m questioning myself why taking an art major only to become more idealistic without any professionalism increase everytime

That aside, I’m using Sparks and Arty to practice shading and values. Critiques are welcome!

Spoilered because I forgot to resize

I think I’m going to make an art dump thread but, eh

I think they both are pretty good but for Sparks, why does her eye look like its part of her hair?

Arty looks perfect though.

these are great!
I suck at values so my critique wont hold alot of weight here

I have very little art experience yet I still will ask questions and make comments Daga. The point is to help the artist, in this case BlackboltLW, see their own art from different perspectives. Using those additional perspectives can help them decide where they want to take their art.

I love the arty one.

Two things stand out for me with the Sparks one.
Her left eye is one. I think that is because it is missing more of the white I am used to seeing. If I look at it from certain angles it also feels like an eye patch. Granted now I want to see you or some else do Pirate Sparks now.
The second thing is her shoes. I guess I feel I am seeing too much white. it just feels like they are missing something.

Still well done with the Sparks one as well BlackboltLW.

Good job.

With more knowledge comes more uncertainty

Yeah only Sparks’s shoes “bother” me on those 2 pics, damn nice drawings! Sparks’s eye going “inside” the hairline seems like an artistic decision to bring up how eyes can be kinda “seen through” the hair, from between them. Which is hard to translate otherwise unless going to very very deep detailing of the hair, which seems unnecessary to the style used here.

now that i noticed the eyes what has been seen cannot be unseen. love both, but sporkie needs identical eyes, it looks like her eyes have 2 different styles.

and the shoes, but i can understand that people dont like drawing them

I know, I’m having a hard time drawing symmetrically.

Also yeah I let the shoes like that because apparently I can’t concentrate anymore last night. 7 cups of coffee in the midnight and constant spamming about Spirals on my Facebook is definitely horrible.

Thanks for the input, guys! I’ll practice more later!
