Sound Cvars- improvements for some

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #1

The weekend arrived and I finally got some free time to work on my config. I have noticed threads with some people complaining that the sound FX are too loud or that the speech is too soft. I thought I’d share what I found/researched.

Please note that the dB scale is a log scale. I suggest you make changes in no more that 10 units at a time or you may make your ears bleed.

s_volume_dB “10” //controls general volume.
s_volume_VoIPActive_dB “-20.0” // controls how many dB the game sound decreases when someone talks on VOIP
s_numberOfSpeakers “6” //can set to 2 is you use headphones?
s_volume_VoIPIn_dB “10” //controls your VOIP volume in. How loud you hear other players
s_volume_VoIPOut_dB “10” //controls your VOIP volume out. How loud you transmit to others.
s_volumeFX_dB “-20” //controls volume level on gun noises and things that aren’t speech
s_volumeMusic_dB “-60” //music volume… duh
s_volumeSpeech_dB “15” //The sound level you hear in game chat. NOT voip, but “I need ammo, etc.”

This is the simplest way I can think of to test. Find an empty server with bots or start a solo map with bots.
-Open the console by pressing CTRL+ALT+~ <–next to the number 1
-type s_volumeFX and press enter. It should tell you what your current value is as well as the default. Boost or lower this value as desired by typing:
-SETA s_volumeFX -10 and press enter. Note: -10 only increases sound in my example where previous value is -20. This would boost the sound FX volume by 10 db and save the setting seta=set +archive.
-close the console (hit ~)and run around a bit listening and see if you like it. If not, boost or reduce as necessary.
-repeat for the other cvars. The voip ones are the hardest to test. You can however turn talkback on if you set up a server to use cheats. by

net_allowTalkBack 0: you cannot hear yourself when you talk into the mic 1: you can hear yourself when you talk into the mic
type: bool (cheat)

Thanks for these tweaks. Some good commands there for the sound.

To bad the game does not have any sliders for these options. Would have helped alot then to typ them manual.

bumping for justice, also 5 star’ed

Thank you very much, I was indeed having trouble hearing “game speech”,
hopefully not anymore.

cool, which data-file is it? i don’t seem to find any file i can use to change configs/cvars… :frowning:

You can bring down the console by pressing CTRL + ALT + ’ (key to the left of 1 on U.S. keyboards)
You can also open NOTEPAD and enter the commands there and save it as “AUTOEXEC.CFG” into this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\*YOUR_STEAM_ID*\22350\local\base

It’s supposed to be auto executed when the game start and set all the cvars you have in the autoexec file but if it doesn’t the first time just bring down the console and type exec autoexec

cheers, mate! much appreciated. the forums is spreading with 99% useless thread but i found the good ones:

plus i found this here on steam:

These are set to default -6 (read in other topics)
So if I put VoIPOut to 10 will they people able to hear me at 4 db?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

(Cankor) #9

Thanks for this. Normally we use teamspeak but today i was trying to play using VoIP and couldn’t hear my team mates. I’m looking all over for the volume controls and coldn’t find them.

How do you manage to forget something like that?

Its easy. You release a beta, and then you progressively patch it. When complaints are made that these features are not in the game, a statement is made that unless its shown in the menu, “its unsupported”.

maybe we can roll our own volume controls using a script which increments or decrements the old value by some fixed amount each time a key is pressed? I think the ones which this would be the most useful on are the voip ones.

should be possible I would think.

Here’s an old ETQW one… any script monkeys want to have a shot at it?

Its a simple increment - decrement value thingo, just needs real brink cvars and an extended system for selecting which item of sound you’re incrementing - reducing… sry too busy (lazy) to do one right now…
