Check in your maps directory, see if there’s a yourmapname.bak file there.
Rename it to yourmapname.map and open that.

All mappers should enable the “snapshot” feature under edit / preferences / startup-auto save. If you use snapshots the editor will automatically generate numbered backup versions of your map. The only draw back to snapshots is disk space, it can be consumed very quickly if you have a big map file size and frequent snapshots.

everybody say back that shit up!

does a little dance that scares off all the women

Does the snapshot frequency coincide with the autosave timer?

Yes.

just for information purposes - someone once had that exact same problem when mapping for Wolf. As I recall, his map had somehow managed to screw up the worldspawn entity and so the first entity was no longer worldspawm it was a brush.

In these situations it is possible to open the .map file in wordpad and edit in manually a worldspawn key (just look at the start of another .map file to see how it should look). Similar problems have occurred whewn the very first brush in the map gets removed by brush cleanup or similar. Weird things can happen (and usually do) so it’s worth knowing how to edit maps in wordpad to repair any damage.

Man, this has happened to me a lot and never understood how. I had figured out how to fix them but I am happy I now know why it happens. Thanx for the info.
