Something to remember when making maps for ET:

(Matt) #1

This is only for those who want to be realistic.

Maps for Wolfenstein Enemy Territory should only be from conflicts (true, or fictional) from during or after 1943. For realism’s sake, things will be screwed up if you make an original invasion map, or anything that happened before April 30th 1943. I know, it’s only a video game, but a lot of people take it seriously when mapping or looking for mapping ideas.

Why not before 04/30/43? I was going to make people guess what the reason is, but that’s boring so I’ll just spill the beans. April 30th 1943 is when the Karabiner 43 was introduced into service. Since the game has the K43, that means it takes place after April 30th 1943.

Some may argue that it takes place after August of 43 even, because panzerfausts didn’t get introduced widely into service until August, but there were still earlier versions of shoulder fired weaponry all the way back in May of 1943.

I’m sure everyone thinks about realism when they’re building bridges by putting a wrench to the side of a box, but it’s still an interesting tidbit.

Blah, as long as its fun, then do it.

for those who want to be realistic, why not after the 6th June 1944? :suspicious:

(Ubiquitous) #4

News flash: Enemy Territory wasn’t made to be realistic. It was made to be fun, exaggerated team based gameplay. If you want something closer to realism, Call of Duty will be out soon enough, and America’s Army is also realistic.

I agree with your point Ubiquitous, but in an attempt to prevent a flame war from breaking out, I have to quote Matt’s original post.

Nah, doesn’t have too be like that. Only has to be fun.

(Matt) #8

Then where are the maps with crazy jumppads and teleporters? LOL.

(sock) #9

TBH those entities do exist and why not create a map with crazy JP and teleporters? Sometimes the wacky things in life are just as much fun. People who want realism should understand that ET can be about experimenting and having fun. ET’s primary goal is having fun and not getting hung up in realism or if the guns fires/works exactly like in real life.

But on a realism point of view, nothing beats good photo sourcing and lots and lots of research into actual situations.

Like the railgun map. Check out this photo I found:

Good work on that map, guys.

WOAH!
I saw that and my eyes bulged out. Lol, now that IS photo referencing!

I think that there are two ways one can look at this. Either one make the maps as realistic as possible (i.e. no fighting in countries where there were no American troops/German troops facing eachother, timing must be right, etc.) or one can say that this is only a game and that having fun and creating situations where the essence of playing is at the center is the right way to go.

I think we can have a little of both, but if you are making a WWII scenario, I think you should strive to get it as accurate as possible. Using pictures from locations and other reference material. This is a lot of work and I suspect that most of the mappers will go for the fun aspect of it anyway. Still, if you want to make a good map, that little extra might be the historical correctness.

I’m really thinking of making a map on the Invasion of crete in 1941 and the battle for Maleme airfield by German Paratroopers vs the Allied force (New Zealand, Australian, British and Greek soldiers)… its just I’m not sure how I’m going to go about creating the terrain r-speed wise. I want to try and keep it similar to the area etc but still have good r-speeds.
Hmmm, lifes a bitch ain’t it…

Why not make a map starting after year 3000 lol. Good thinking tho matt

(Ifurita) #15

gameplay > realism

(MindConfusion) #16

In my personal opinion for a map should be alittle realistic and fun.

Meaning it will catch the eye and will have ya always wanting to play that map. Thats what I’m going for with my map well trying lol.

But in the long run any map is good aslong as its fun to play.

You do have to see that total realism may also ruin gameplay, as the map doesn’t support fair teams anymore. It should be realistic, no teleports… that goes a bit too far for me. But I think total realism is not really possible to do.
