some new questions (hint brushes)

(Yojo) #1

my map is still not smooth (but i caulked everything what was needed.) so i followed 2 tutorials and googled a bint on the use of hint brushes.
i understand where hint brushes are used for. but i don’t understand how to place them.

in my map i have the following situation:

now when a player is in the following situation:

the game doesn’t have to create whats behind the corner.
now, how should i place the hint brushes in this example? i have viewed goldrush but i don’t understand how the brushes have to be placed.

It’s not easy to explain it with 3D screenshots. You could post the xy view of Radiant for this region so that others can modify/repost your screenshot to explain where hints could be useful.

Yojo

The best explanation i had read on hint and structural/detail brushes. was this one

http://www.nibsworld.com/rtcw/tutorial_detail_and_hint_brushes_part1.shtml

Trying to hint large open scale maps is not very easy as you have to have things that completely block the view from one point to another. tunnels like the ones used in fuel dump are the best way of cutting down on that is drawn for each area.

For some reason only half of your screenshot shows up. Anyway, since I can’t see the top of the hint brush, I would imagine you’re not doing it correct.

Here’s an example of where to use hint brushes:

Basically, anywhere you can draw a line from one point to the next (in this case, the green points), a hint brush can be used.

The tutorial that DAbell posted is excellent. Take a look at it.

Hopefully you’ll find this usefull

firstly this :-

http://www.wolfensteinx.com/surface/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1488

helped me learn alot whan I was getting into it

then some questions on my map, which is pretty open (as you’re seens to be), Deteoni gave some good examples of hinting when applied to 3D - (DEBells link to the hinting tutorial is the best I’ve seen also, for 2D), Detoenis replies on this thread help a lot.

I’m 2 beers, 2 bottlesof wine & 2 whisky’s down so I hope the thread links provide a better explanation than what must be my garbled typing…I have a feeling my attempts to edit my mistakes have made things worse…

Get my tris_vis_fps.pk3 tutorial at www.spyjuice.com and review the map in developer/devmap mode and read the readme.txt.
