Some "Ark" like architecture concepts.

I dunno if this has been shared among the eagerly awaiting Brink folks, but here is something I found interesting. These guys are thinking of making a sort of self sustaining island where people live. A cool thing about this island is that the buildings grow downward. Which leads me to the question. How deep is the ark? Is it just contantly at sea level or is there underground (water?) stuff going on?

ARKish

afaik, there are no underwater maps

(tokamak) #3

If they’re basing themselves on existing technology then the Ark lays on styrofoam filled slabs of concrete.

(Grimi) #4

In an interview they mentioned they had either visited or looked up people who were building these “Arks” in real life. They even mentioned a construction similar to the Bioshock world which reminds me of what you are describing with buildings growing downwards.

(Reanimator) #5

Holy awesome-sauce that sounds cool!

(3Suns) #6

Cool!

and Nail, has there been confirmation that there would be no underwater levels in the game? I thought that was still unknown. Certainly, SD has promised us more diversity than Container City and Shipyard. I kind of figured we would be seeing some cool levels on the Ark proper that were under sea level.

Seascrapers, nice idea.

(crazyfoolish) #8

i hope there is at least one underwater map

(Nail) #9

there was a limitation that stopped underwater maps in ET:QW, as it’s the same engine, there may be the same limitation

mind you, knife wars in the canals of Venice in W:ET were great moments in LAN parties

Isn’t world’s facility map under water? I believe also his big project he never finished was an underwater map.

(.Chris.) #11

It was set under water but it wasnt under water in the sense there was a water entity surrounding all the map.

Aslong as you can’t get to the ‘water’ there is no engine limitation what so ever to prevent you from making an ‘underwater’ map just fake it using textures, lights and effects.

Also I seem to remember some mod had limited success in putting back underwater movement, I think QW:TA has also tried adding it back in.

to op: i like that idea, in RL.
I vote for trying that concept out on the Netherlands!, they are already below sea level… so flood it.
give the cows some lifesavers… and voila.

Anyway.
For brink it could be very cool, but only if you can shoot the windows out.
“will be closed by a thick door after letting some water in, on lower area of the map”

Speaking of Some “Ark” like architecture concepts…
I was watching Surrogates
the other day and there is a chase scene in there which made me think of
Brink immidiately (containercity & parcour)

When I hear the story behind the Ark, and the inspiration for the devs, I always think of The Venus Project.
It is a real life movement based around moving mankind forward as a species, rather than sit a fester in the flaws of Society today. I hope one day it succeeds in its cause.

(tokamak) #15

Ah, the ‘wouldn’t it be cool if’ movement.

(yoomazir) #16

Always bet on the original Ark stuff…

I use my Necromancer skills and bring this thread back from the below,

I stumbled upon this which i thought looked awesome and a little bit Brink related,

That looks too good to be true.
