So... sales?

I’ve pretty much gone cold turkey on buying Mercs at all. $10 is just too damn steep for a character with one skill and guns that I have to unlock by RNGing with cards. Hell, I rarely do it on Heroes of the Storm, only purchasing characters I know I love (like Jaina and Johanna). However… I’ve not been able to stop buying when it comes to their half off sales. When I see a character drop to $3 - $4 (or even $5), I’m all over that. Why? Because it feels like a really good deal.

I realize that with the new daily missions system, I can easily afford a new merc by playing a few days. I think that’s awesome, especially since I defended Marvel Heroes, and it can take up to a solid week of grinding for a 600 splinter character, and Heroes has that One Daily Quest system and the paltry gold gain. You’ve effectively improved the game greatly, and even removed that ungodly system that used to take money from us for our wins. I have no problem supporting you because of all the awesome changes

… I would just really, really like to be able to get some of the mercs half off, rather than being assured that I’m gonna be waiting for said weeks by straight out farming to get them, and having no money to buy their bronze cards so I can just get the loadout I want and go. Any chance we could start to see some sales, especially for some of the newer characters?

Well, you already know you can buy the exact card you want. No RNG there. And while you play you can save up cases and then either get lucky or trade-up and hopefully get what you want. I have 41 cases right now (all from match drops) and am ready for the next merc drop (120k credits saved up).

I’m sure eventually there will be merc discounts or sales but the game isn’t even officially released yet. $10 is a bit too high IMO and out of impulse buy range. I want to support SD but I’m definitely not paying $10 for every merc so I figured I’d buy every third merc with real money and buy the rest with credits to even it out a bit.

Since this is a F2P competitive shooter, players should be able to pick up the mercs and loadouts they need relatively quickly especially since we are talking about a new game where a stable and large community still has to form it’s initial shape. Right now this progression is locked behind a massive grind or very steep pricing (I’m sorry but I’m not paying 9.99 euro’s for a new merc). and this will inevitably discourage new players from spending money on this game or even worse, it might turn them away for good. Price your mercs more attractive, implement a gear loadout crafting/breakdown for resource system, differentiate between gear loadouts (impacts gameplay) and bling loadouts (money sink) and you’ve fixed your largest problems instantaneously.

You are forgetting that there are tons and tons of unlocks in other competitive FPS games. BF and CoD both require a significant amount of time before you have everything you might want unlocked and those are $60 titles. TF2 also has an unlock system that takes quite a bit of time. One of the few games that gives you access to everything out of the gate is CS:GO. Unlock systems is what keeps some people tied to a game and keeps them playing.

I do believe that it would be nice if SD did a better job explaining many things including how the unlock system works and what player options are. But I am not against the system it uses to get unlocks as it can be much faster to get what you want, without paying anything, than $60 AAA shooters. People seem to keep forgetting that and I don’t understand how since pretty much every game these days has an unlock system.

I’m not forgetting anything. The unlocks on BF and CoD are atrocious for new players that want to jump into competitive matches from the get go and I’m fairly certain it’s one of the many reasons that’s holding the competitive scene back in these games. There is a reason COD4 had promod and ESL BF4 has it’s own VERY limited ruleset for competitive. These are games not made with competitive play in mind and I’d like to think DB is.

In my opinion unlock systems keeping people tied to a game is a statement that’s highly disputable to say the least. Perhaps it gives a lot of players a sense of progression. Besides that, I’m not at all advocating to remove unlocks in the game. I’m merely saying that the unlock system is in a bad spot in my humble opinion, and seeing this issue is being brought up a lot on the subreddit as well as on this forum, I’d like to think I’m not the only one with this opinion.

I did my fair share of research on the loadouts in DB and I think I have a solid understanding of the system as it is. I just think that it could be a lot better then it is right now and I tried to explain the problems as I percieved them, from my perspective.

Perhaps you can read my previous post again and this time a little more carefully.

Actually it’s because those games under a competitive setting are pretty terrible.

Agreed and I’ve never said otherwise.

I Disagree on TF2 statement - 90% of stocks weapons are much better than weapons you unlock, i played almost 3k hours of tf2 so i know what i’m talking about - my main was soldier with stock rocket launcher + stock shotgun and non stock but easily droppable equalizer. My demoman was all stock, same with scout, i loved bow + stock smg as sniper even if that was much worse than stock sniper rifle. Also i was using stock heavy only exception was his melee.

Actually TF2 unlocking system is much much better than DB will ever be.
