Seeing as Dirty Bomb is produced by War Chest (who make f2p games) and not Bethesda who makes purchasable and we can already reserve names for a game they have no idea if we are going to buy or not i think it is safe to assume that this game is going to be free to play, which is a great idea the only problem is if they make it pay2win or ridiculously hard to do anything without being a “Premium” member which would kill a game that looks as good as this.
What are your guys thoughts on f2p games? because in my opinion they are awesome but are rarely done well and i hope this can be a exception
So its gonna be free2play...
It’s a good move in my opinion, as long as they can back it up with a good core game and has a free2play system that isn’t actually pay2win. Brink was a disappointment and guess people would be reluctant to put money upfront on SD’s next game, making it f2p helps remedy that, it costs nothing to try, there’s no risk for the player, hopefully it turns out good and players stick with it.
I think Ghost Recon: Online, Blacklight: Retribution and Team Fortress 2 are good examples of Free To Play but not Pay To Win. If they can mix the in depth soldier customization of Blacklight: Retribution with the art designs of Brink and the class based game play of Team Fortress 2 I’d definitely play Dirty Bomb.
If they play their cards right, f2p can be what SD wanted all along. f2p nearly always ensures a dedicated playerbase.
For many years TF2 was NOT free. Class based game play sucks in TF2. Seriously at least use google and wikipedia to find out what u are dealing with. SD released 3 games which are like thousand times better than TF2.
That seems really opinionated. How does TF2 suck at class based play? It’s the best example of class based play of any game and so far none of SD’s games have been on the level of TF2 in players even before it being f2p.
TF2 morphed from a standard pay model to a F2P when they brought in the customised hats, followed by the storefront - Mann Co.
My view is that F2P is difficult to pull off from the getgo. You either make it so it reduces grind and so is a form of p2w or you risk making absolutely no money as the groundbase of players takes time to settle and moreover care enough to pay for the non-p2w monetised elements.
Again I would have to say that ET was better than TF2, especially at the class based play. Have you ever even played any of SD’s previous titles other than Brink? I think that in it’s height, ET would have surpassed the level of players of TF2, if you’re talking about numbers, easily. Hell, even 10 years later ET still has an amazing number of players that are dedicated to the community. They are still even putting out custom content.
Though, perhaps both you and pheon1x can elaborate on your views though, as saying just it sucked, or no it doesn’t suck isn’t really much to go on. What makes you think that TF2 was so much better than ET, ETQW, or even Brink? Would be better to answer that and be able to have somebody respond directly to what you mean, rather than just generalizing it.
I have played ETQW when it was released. There weren’t too many problems with it just that the marketing for the game kinda sucked and there were some not so good design decisions, I have seen pro mod and it seemed to fix all of the issues I think, otherwise most people unfortunately disregarded it on first sight and just saw it as a buggy clone of battlefield 2. I have not played the Wolfenstein games and I’m not counting the original as technically it was not all SD’s work that made the game what it is. I’m basing TF2 being the best team based game off of it being the only current competitive team-based FPS. Always top 5 on steam and currently about 2000 players in competitive teams in Europe & NA and just as much across the rest of the world. TF2 has the most tactical depth of any FPS I’ve played, but that’s just my opinion.
Ok I can see where you’re coming from now, and I see that you’re just meaning to compare TF2 to both Brink and ETQW as it looks like you’ve not played ET based on the response.
It’s a shame in my opinion though, as you missed out on one hell of a game that was F2P from launch. I would say if you can to get it and give it a shot, you may be surprised. Last I knew there were still competition players/teams playing the game, and I think there were still pick up matches going on as well, though that was about a year ago, but I am sure somebody here can tell you if there are still matches going on.
If it ever becomes an all out pay2win game, I will more than likely uninstall.
Whats problem with free to play? I was playing Quake-live for some years, and its also free to play. Even its not so really high price to buy premium account (for 2$ or smth) and pro account (3$) per mounth (btw no any affect to gameplay, like just buy very very big gun and go kill every one
its just about more maps/creating clan). I think it pretty understandable, that f2p game will make better support for SD and ofc more players.
This is like I think the third post by you I have seen ragging on TF2 which I don’t understand at all… The different classes play out very differently, require different types of skill sets and thrive in different situations which is how I would assume class based game play is supposed to play out so I am not understanding how TF2’s “sucks” or the game is “complete crap”. Demo and medic are a little overpowered so it hurts in pub games a bit but in the competitive scene most leagues and ladders and such limited those classes to 1 per team and even if they didn’t put class limits in competitive play a team wouldn’t strive on stacking a single class as there are a few classes that provide unique utility that is hard to pass up. Overall I would say that TF2 had a pretty good balance compared to most FPS games, required more skill with at least weapon play and was a very fun game to play. Now this is coming from a player that played 500+ hours of ET, 2000+ hours of ranked quake wars, participated in 3 seasons of 6 vs. 6 NA competitive leagues (2 of those seasons I played in multiple leagues), 2 seasons of 4 vs. 4 competitive QW, had one of the most active scrimming NA teams during 2 of those 6 vs. 6 seasons and played 100 hours of Brink (mainly PUGs and scrims). While on the other hand I only pubbed TF2, so there is hardly a bias towards TF2 in my opinions. Do I prefer TF2 to ET? No. QW? No. Brink? Yes. But to say the class based game play in TF2 sucks is kind of ridiculous.
As good as Tribes Ascend was, I would much prefer if this game had a similar model to Quake Live. Let us pay to host private games with the ability to put our own spin on the settings (similar to custom game settings in Halo?), access to premium maps and maybe some cosmetic options.
£3.50 pm and cosmetic purchases seperate.
You get me? Good.
Oh great so it is gonna be F2P
Thats not a bad thing, I mean im sure they can make money easy this way, And all our questions wont be answered for a while, But see theres currently quite a BIG competition in the F2P market and plenty of games do the F2P part right
But see, I wanted a CLASSIC FPS for pc, up to 64 player dedicated servers HOSTED BY US mods or no mods you have 90% control of what you want your server to be like, I cant see this happening on a F2P.
Decent F2P shooters are BLR topping it for me, but also theres Planetside 2, TF2, Bullet run, A bunch of those counter strike clones that everyone seems to like too.
Now i would want this to be like ET QW with the class system, But also i want people to be bullet sponges, You know… where you actually need to think before you reload? Im sick and tired of this <5 bullets per kill rule that modern shooters tend to do.
I just want a game and many other people do thats a arcade fun shooter like the late 90s With health bars and no health regen, Pickups on the floor, That sort of stuff, Is it too much to ask for?
Many people will just settle with Black ops 2 with true dedicated servers and mod support, Like cod 4

Not at all. Enjoy: http://www.quakelive.com/
Im sorry but me and quite a lot of people think this.
Playing Quake live is not as good as playing Q3A Its the same game… But it does not feel like it for some odd reason.
I’ll happily pay2play, but not play2win. Perhaps you could do the “pay what you want” model à la “humble bundle”.
